I'm currently a sophomore at a ranked liberal arts college and I am a Economics major with a French minor. I did horrible my freshman year as I had a heavy load of classes. I basically had a 2.75 GPA freshman year. Last semester, I got a 3.92 GPA and would like to transfer to Amherst college. I had some personal issues that hampered any success my freshman year. My dad went there and he is very active with their alumni association. I feel like I need to be more challenged having gone to a academically rigorous private high school.Bottom line: Although I did horribly my freshman year, I am turning things around. Do I have any shot in getting into Amherst College? Any suggestions/advice?

bumping this

You don’t tell us SAT scores and high school rank.

If you could have gotten in as a freshmen, had a tough freshmen year due to personal problems but had a strong recovery and can get great revcs, it’s probably worth a try as a well connected legacy.

If the scores and HS record were not competitive, it’s unlikely one strong term will get you in.

Have your father talk to the alumni office, they will be honest about what it takes.

I went to a competitive HS with 95 kids in my class. I was probably in the bottom 30 percentile but at any other HS I could have been in the top 10 (sounds strange but probably true). My SAT was a 2010 which is not all that great but decent IMO. My dad did talk to a rep and he said that most transfers need an A- average for 2 years to be accepted. I’m obviously not in that category but I think with my last stellar semester and good recommendations, and a good essay, I might have at least some shot of getting in.

Probably need to apply next year.

Did you get accepted?

^^Decisions don’t come out until about mid-May.

I’m still anxiously waiting…I should know within the next 2 weeks.
