Chances Please!!! Afr Am Female....

Hey you all, Please tell me what you think my chances are in getting into Columbia. I've applied early decision.

African American Female
1st Gen college
south florida

GPA
3.898 uw
4.9w

Rank: 1st out of class of 558 (99th percentile)

SAT:
1300 (630 Math, 670 Verbal)

SAT II:
630 Writing
620 Lit.
580 Math

About 5 ECs since 9th grade, 2 w/ leadership positions

I would say that you have a really good chance of getting into Columbia with your GPA and rank and SAT score.

good shot! :)

best of luck

What are some of your ECs?

also, is your #1 rank exclusively yours, or is it shared by others? (no offense intended, just wondering b.c you gave the 99 percentile in parenthesis)

otherwise, assuming strong essay + recs, you have a solid shot.

I think by comparing ur sat and gpa/rank they will probably think your high school is pretty lousy ... no offense but a 4.9 W GPA gets more than 1400 normally on sat 1 and more than 700 on sat 2 therefore they wont really take you gpa so "seriously" ... just want you to know the facts..

ECs:
National Honor Society
FPSA
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (12th only)
Chess Club (12th only)
Police Explorers (Post Sergeant)
Teen Court (Youth Attorney)
Basketball

The rank is exclusively mine, but it says 99th percentile on my transcript so thats why i added that.

My high school is pretty lousy but i was hoping my gpa/rank compared to my SAT scores would make it seem like it seem like I'm a great student, but just not that great of a test taker...But if they think my school's lousy does that mean I don't have a good chance?

no sweetie ... of course everyone has a "shot" to speak.
some may have better "chances" than others..
but that does not mean that you are not qualified.
they will review ur app (as with everyone else's) very carefully..
and it just depends on a lot of things.. although school grades are a big deal... grades, stats, scores and all those "numbers" are not always everything.

just have faith... fingers crossed!

good luck! :)

It does not hurt to apply, but I would not apply to too many reach schools... I would limit it to around 4. I am applying to 5 reach schools although, and depending on what I get on the SATs this december, I may add a few more schools.

Just to be realistic though, rank does not really matter when it comes to schools that are, as you said, pretty lousy. I knew the Validictorian of anothe "pretty lousy" school, he went off to Cal State Fullerton, and had to take remedial english classes. I know, the SATs suck, but sadly, its the only way the schools can competitivly compare people from different schools. (And my SAT score is also somewhat low, so don't think I actually like those bastards at ETS)

I just had a mega rant about the SATs and people's obssession about these stupid scores on the International Students board. I think I'll spare all of you of another rant.

Anyway, I hate the fing SATs with a passion.

Umm and I think Columbia is my ultimate reach. The other is probably Brown.
And the rest are arguably all matches except for BC and Occidental, which are kinda my safeties (if you can call any school a safety)
