Chances? please

well ln, in response to your previous post here is all the stuff you asked for. My gpa is 4.573 and my SAT is 2000, my college choice is the University of Pennsylvania. Personally, I think the admissions process into any college, including the one i selected, is a crap shoot; it just depends on how the admissions committee is feeling that day. In response to your assertion that "[your] school is considered one of the competive schools in Riverside county", it must not be that competitive if your class rank is so high and your SAT so terribly low. Just what, out of curiosity did your valedictorian score on the new SAT? 1600? And yes, I agree with you that colleges look at the SAT as merely a test and will acknowledge your 4 years of hard work, but if your scores are so low they will question the validity of your school's courses and school's grading policies. I was not trying to diss you in my previous post ln, I was just telling you my opinion of your chances, which by the way you asked for when you posted this thread. I hope that you will just not continue to assume that colleges will merely "overlook" your SAT; it is a very crucial factor in the admissions process.

ps: I didnt have a mentor/tutor either. I just self studied with a Kaplan book, just as the majority of the test takers do. I hope your "circumstances" are not so bad that you can afford an internet connection but not a 15 dollar book. better luck on your other tests.

I liked your can-afford-internet-but-can't-buy-book "thing".

To put it bluntly, a 1390 is ridiculously low, below the national average even, and there really aren't any excuses since you still have a chance to take the test again. Even if the SAT does not equal instant rejection, if you can't be arsed to give that little extra effort for your future, then maybe you don't deserve to go to a UC. You don't match the requirements anyway, because you need two SATIIs under your belt to apply. Good luck, try again with transfers.

You're not going to raise your 1390 to an 1800 in 2 months. Even if you had an entire Princeton Review course, you'd be lucky to raise it 200. I suggest you just do a lot of reading, or whatever. Good luck, buddy.

If you are in ELC, you are guaranteed a UC school, i don't know about the ones you 've listed...my friend's brother got into UCR (he even failed classes and i don't think he did well on his sat well at all), at least that's what he told people -_-But since you have high Gpa, you could get into ucr. Some people aren't very good at test taking

ur SAT SCORE is extremely low BUT because u are ELC, u are guareenteed to get into 1 UC (UCR or UCM are the easiest)
however you should check out the UC admissions sight if you are eligible to EVEN APPLY for UC. THere is an eligibility calculator which asks you to input your GPA, SAT 1, and SAT 2 scores. Based on those facts the calculator tells you if u are eligible for UC. I think you are eligible because of you high GPA, also dont forget to take SAT II's, u must focus on getting atleast 450 on those. Finally, 390 on writing is unacceptable, i am sure u will be able to bring that score up to atleast 450. Also, i knw many students in ELC in my school who are ranked top 4% and have an SAT scores between 1700-1950. Improvement by 300+ points is rare, but possible. I myself improved 180 pts by taking it again. I expect to improve another 100+ pts once I get back my October results.
UCR is possible, seemingly a safety if ur SAT is atleast 1500. Work on that y dont forget the SAT 2's, i advise u to take the easiest ones possible, MAth 1c, and something else
good luck:)

Hey kid, stop studying for your silly GPA and focus on the SAT. Have priorities!! As is, sonic is right, but forget anything but the bottom UCs.

I don't have internet access at home but since I only have 5 classes, I use it during school hour instead.
Ps. I did take two SATIIs.

y ur scores were?

SATII

Math Level 2- 710
US History- 650

I know I did better on the subjest tests because I had a whole month to study for it, plus it was the second time that I got to see how the testing atmosphere was like as opposed to when the first time I took the SATI. I didn't realize the timing pressure.

this whole thing is totally confusing me...idk whether or not to think ur school is extremely easy and filled with below avg students or what.

But that doesnt seem to match up because you must be learning something to get fairly decent SAT II's.

That plus i dont buy into the bad test taking because u scored a 710 on Math Level II SAT II.

Idk what to think on this, but i do think you arent taking the SAT serious enough. It holds a lot more weight then you seem to believe.

Think about this, if a college accepts you, your SAT score alone will reduce their average because its such an influential outlier wow look what stats has done to me. Why would a school want to reduce their average because of 1 student.

I dont mean to sound harsh, but you really dont seem to be offering anything that the top UC's are looking for.

Your GPA is great, but i would definatly question the kinds of courses you took and what you did to get a 4.5 if your SAT scores are low across the board.

Agreed, you are WAY underestimating the importance of the SAT. I know a kid in my class who was near the top but blew off the SAT, he got rejected almost everywhere.

well if youre taking the sat again, good luck with that. be sure to study like crazy and u'll do fine

If English is your second language, your math score should at least even it out a little, but it doesn't... But, looking at your SAT II scores, which aren't too bad, I think it shows that you have the capability of scoring around 1800. Definitely retake. Memorize some vocab lists or something...
