im about to finish my junior year at a competitive public high school
my weighted gpa is 3.75 which puts me somewhere near the bottom of the top quarter of my class
i have taken 3 ap classes and will take 3 next year
i expect to get 5s or at least 4s on the ap tests i took this spring
i have also taken numerous honors classes, but not every one offered
sat: cr-750 math-720 writing-750
i retook the sat in june
my psat score will probably get me a letter of commendation
sat ii: bio-690 us-740 i will take literature in the fall and will most likely score in the 700s
i have played 3 different sports at my high school but none at the varsity level and i wont be playing any next year
3 years so far on the staff of the literary magazine, next year as editor-in-chief
2 years working for the schools television station, next year more advanced
essay writing is my thing so those should be pretty good

Your gpa may be a problem, but since your SAT score is good, you MAY be able to make up the difference. Since you are a good writer, you need to show your passions in your essays. Use your experience on the literary magazine and how you worked to achieve editor-in-chief. I hope you have some community service to be able to write about.

thank you for your response!
ive only done random intermittent community service so thats a problem i guess. i dont know how to fix that now since i only have a few months and if i tried to start in the fall it would look like im only doing it for applications... any suggestions?

I wouldn't try to squeeze in community servide now. You want to create an application "package" that is really you, and it should be honest. Look thoroughly at your activities. If you know what you want to do in college (or anytime in the future), you will want to write about the things you have done that build up to that, what you have learned, how you will use it along with what you want to do. Show how you have used your time wisely- it doesn't have to be community service. (I know someone at Harvard who never did community service.)

If you improved on any section of your SAT's- that will be good because USC uses a superscore- they will look at the best result of each subject from different sittings.

Just stay positive and start working on those essays!

Here was my experience...

I was accepted.

At the time I was accepted, I had not completed my AP exams, so those don't seem to have much importance in the process (though good scores can't hurt, I suppose).

I had a GPA of 4 and an ACT score of 32. Academically, that's all I got. I had absolutely no notable extracurriculars.

I did some community service for 4 months to put on the application.

I know GPA and test scores are probably considered most heavily, but I'm very impressed with your profile there. I'd definitely apply, if that's what you want to know.

And also, remember, none of us (I think) are really experts on here, so no matter what any of us think, take it with a grain of salt, and make your own decision when the time comes.
