White Male from California

Overall GPA
3.7 UW
3.9 W (6 semesters)

UC GPA: 4.0

I go to an extremely competitive high school, consistently ranked around top 50 in the nation. Roughly 20 % attend UC Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford, MIT, or Ivy League Schools. 50 National Merit Scholars out of a class of 450

School doesn't rank, yet I think my class rank is in the 20%-30% Decile (OUCH!!)

Freshman Year 3.56/3.56
Sophomore Year 3.68/3.93
Junior Year 3.85/4.2
Senior Year 4.0/4.6 (I know it seems silly that I am "predicting", but I will go to all ends to make SURE this happens!)

My poor grades as an underclassman can be explained by the fact that my father was severly ill with lukemia those years, and during that same period of time, all 4 of my Grandparents died. My grades have significantly improved since, though. I wrote my common app essay on this, and as well my counselor wrote up on this too.

From my Freshman to Junior year I took the most advanced courses offered at my school (except second-tier science in junior year, only 3 years of German)

Senior Year Courses:
English Masters H
Physics 1A
AP Economics
AP Statistics
Concert Choir
AP BC Calculus
Chamber Singers

**Princeton

Harvard
U Chicago
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UCSD
UCSB
UCI
UCD

Thanks for your input

I would say you're in at UCI, UCD, UCSB, and also have a good shot at UCSD, UCLA, UCB.

edit: for reference, I had around 3.9 W, 2060 SAT, and 4 years XC/track and was accepted to UCI, UCD, but rejected by UCLA and UCB. Didn't apply to UCSB or UCSD.

<<<bump>>></bump>

Why don't you tell us where you think you'll get in with the compelling reasons why those colleges will accept you?

I really don't know - that's the whole idea of this thread

bump

I think I wrote a little too much...

Very strong and interesting profile. Nobody can say for certain, but I suspect that you will have many options next March.

bump bumbedy bumb

No for Princeton, Stanford, Harvard and Chicago' probable yes for Northwestern; I know nothing of the UC system, except it hates out-of-staters and UCSD has really nice tennis courts.

Why no for Chicago and yes for Northwestern? Aren't they similar in selectivity?

Yes and no - meaning, Their student profiles are very similar, yet Northwestern is an easier admit overall than UChicago, which is more exacting and ruthless regarding all things written. I think your credentials are top notch, but everyone who applies there is top notch. You need to hit the long ball on their essays, and then with your music background, you might end up on the plus side. You should definitely apply, as you are in their range.
