Chances/SLE concern

First off, I know that at this point nobody can really accurately “Chance me”, but I would just like some criticism or complements to help me.

Currently a High School Junior, here is a basic summary of what I have going for me right now:

ACT: English (31) Math (24) Science (28) Reading (34) Writing (24) Composite (29)
I know my math and writing scores are low, I’m taking 2 more act’s in April to bring them up. (Hopefully both to a 27 or 28)

Cumulative weighted GPA: 3.7 out of 4.0 (Very positive I’m in the top 20% for my class rank)

Sport: I play Ice Hockey for a club team, I have been playing hockey since i was 5 (since club is more competitive than high school hockey) I’ve also obtained 3 academic excellence awards from the League I play for.
I also do crossfit for weight lifting, I would consider myself in very good shape.

Clubs: Chinese Honors Society, Triathlon Club, Skills USA (Engineering Team Captain, 2x IL State Qualifier, Varsity Letter), Will be attending Boys state this summer

Church: I have gone on missions trips every summer since 7th grade. My high school missions trips (Freshman and Sophomore year) were to Utah where I helped lead kids camps for kids who had been abused in polygamist families. I will be going on a third missions trip back to Utah this summer (Junior Year) again.

AP/Honors: Freshman Year- Hon World History, Honors English, Honors Engineering
Sophomore Year: Hon English II, AP European History
Junior Year: AP English 3 III, AP US History
Senior Year (Signed up for): AP Biology, AP English 4

Math: FR: Geometry SOPH: Algebra 2 trig JR: Pre-Calc Sr: Calculus

SLE: I actually also have a question regarding SLE. I applied back in early febuary, but unfortunately I only entered my ACT scores and not any of my extra curricular activities. I know people who have gotten acceptance with in a couple of weeks, and even though mine says PENDING (I updated my application), is it right to think that I have not made it in?

I’m basically willing to do anything right now to get into west point, any tips, suggestions or compliments will help greatly!

Thanks!

I’m in the USMA field force which means I’m a graduate and do volunteer admissions work in Illinois. USMA places a great value on Math as it is, essentially an engineering school at its core. So I really think you need to work on your math ACT score. West Point superscores so you stronger test scores will still help you. SLE decisions are made based primarily on standardized test scores although consideration is given to URM and maybe some other groups. The fact that you have not taken part in a varsity sport or better yet been a captain does not help you. You may be right that your club hockey is more challenging but how do you expect an admissions officer to know that? I don’t think SLE decisions have been released yet so don’t lose hope.

What you wrote sounds somewhat similarly to me! I am still waiting to hear back as well.
I have a 29 on the ACT and similar SAT scores. My GPA is a little higher (4.3), but I think you have more ECs than me due to honors societies (my school doesn’t have any.)

I have more sports “accreditations” so to speak, but you have good volunteerism. Your class selection looks pretty strong too.

I too wish that I knew exactly what they wanted, but its hard to express one’s self only through first-time test scores. Too bad they don’t look at class selection or unique experiences!

I wouldn’t be to worried if you don’t get in for two reasons:

  1. A lot of qualified people apply.
  2. I don’t know the exact percentage, but there are more than a few people who get accepted to SLE and don’t like it.

Hope you hear back soon!

@Wje9164be I take a math practice test every day, I’m almost 100% confident that ill get a 28 or higher on my math. On a technical level, since my hockey team represents the highest level it could be considered varsity. But your right, I cant afford to play on two hockey teams at the same time though, cost wise that is really expensive and I dont want to downgrade on competition. Could my engineering team be considered a varsity sport since I earned a varsity letter? On the positive side, I have become Chinese Honors Society President for 2016-2017 and will become president of my schools fishing club once I finish completing it. I plan on running fund raisers through these clubs such as becoming a wounded warrior student ambassador. Thanks for your response

@norakate It’s good that you have those sports roles. Hope you hear back soon also!
