Chances Threads... Worth it?

Sorry, off topic, but I had to comment on this:

None of my schools were "safeties" because I liked them all, and would have been happy at any of them.

Actually, the definition of a "safety" is one that you're almost guaranteed to get into. It doesn't have to be a school you don't like. In fact, it's a really good idea to apply to safeties you do like and would be happy at. Because if you don't get into any reaches or matches, you don't want to be stuck going to a school you hate. Also, for some people, the school they like best, even better than some reaches or matches, is a safety school. For example, I'm at a school that was a safety for me, and I rejected others that were matches or reaches.

Anyway, my point is that you can like and be happy with even safeties, and in fact, should not even apply to a safety that you don't like unless it is necessary for some reason.

floppy accurately matched me to cal and la

i made cornell (reach)
didnt make JHU or NU

I'll post you my stats I guess...

SAT: 720 Verbal 750 Writing 650 Math (2120 new scale / 1370 old scale)
SAT II: Literature - 680 Chemistry - 590

GPA: 3.65 (weighted) on a 3.85 scale (my school is weird!)
Class rank: 7 / 193 (top 3%)

AP Exams: Chemistry - 2 English - 5

National Merit Scholarship Commendation

Dual high school program. I go to a regular high school in the morning and a magnet school of arts in the afternoon until 4:15 (study Creative Writing there). Earned me a total of 34 credits instead of the required 22.

Summer program at Wesleyan University
Poetry class at Trinity College
Chemistry class at University of Connecticut

10+ hours of community service per week

Publication in Trinity College's Lit. Mag.

I'm poor and not a legacy to any of these schools. I declared English as my major on all applications and checked Caucasian for ethnicity.

Schools:
Brandeis University - Accepted
Brown University - Rejected
Columbia University - Rejected
Dartmouth College - Rejected
Georgetown University - Accepted
Johns Hopkins University - Accepted
New York University - Accepted
Trinity College - Accepted
University of Connecticut - Accepted into Honors Program
Vassar College - Rejected
Wesleyan University (top choice) - Rejected

I was told that all of my schools were reaches except for Trinity and UConn and that I needed to be more realistic. The outcome of all of my letters was pretty much what I expected (except I didn't think I would get into Georgetown and thought I would get into Wesleyan). Going into the application process, you have a fairly accurate idea of where you will and won't get in.

flopsy:

Waitlisted:
Amherst college-reach
Pomona College-reach
Wesleyan University-match
Haverford College-match

Rejected:
Vassar College-match

This sucks. I pretty much applied to the first two colleges because it was free and now it looks like I'm going to attend one. I feel so utterly unwanted.

South Korean international studying in Canada
asked for lots of financial aid

Princeton - reach - accepted w/ lots of financial aid
Yale - reach - waitlisted
Cornell - match - accepted (received one of those "likely admitted" emails)
Harvard - reach - rejected
MIT - reach - rejected
Stanford - reach - rejected
Caltech - low reach - rejected

I submitted my information to CC for the $89 analysis and it was very helpful and accurate.

"Keeping in mind my caveats regarding competitive admissions stated previously, and assuming that you can maintain your current level of performance, I’m willing to predict the following outcomes for your college process:

Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford: I hope you applied early to Yale (assuming that you listed your schools in order of preference). In my opinion, you have the necessary qualifications to get into any of these for schools. However, I can’t say for sure about each one, so I’ll give you an educated guess. I’ll say that you are accepted at three of these four and hope that you score at all four. Yale is the hardest of this group foe me to predict because we’ve had some real disappointments with our Yale clients. These have been seniors with profiles at least similar to yours, but for some reason they were denied at Yale. If you went early to Yale, that may be enough of an advantage for you to offset my “caution” factor. So, there you have my educated guess. Get ready for some very exciting fat mail from this group.

Dartmouth, Cornell, Penn, Duke: I can’t see any reason why you would be denied at any of this group. I say you’re in at all four.

Univ. of Richmond, Penn State: Safeties for you and Honors programs admission. You won’t need these schools.

A few more suggestions:

Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore, Haverford, JHU, Georgetown SFS, UVA, and William & Mary."

Well, he was pretty much on target. I was accepted @ HYP, waitlisted Stanford. I was accepted at Dartmouth, Cornell, & Columbia, waitlisted Penn (actually that was a bit of a surprise, I thought that was a safer Ivy but we do live in PA so maybe that hurt me). I was a Richmond Scholar and accepted at Schreyer with a scholaship.

I never really believed I would get into the Big Four. I know so many kids who have applied from our high school with great credentials and were denied. I really believe if I applied again next year, with the same info the outcome could be different.

My advice to anyone is- do the stats analysis. It is thorough, informative, and reassuring as you work through your senior year with no clue as to how things will unfold. My next piece of advice is to find schools that you are good matches that you love. I really like Schreyer and I would have been very happy attending school in Happy Valley. Last piece of advice - stay off the boards as the time gets closer. Everyone seemed to be getting early writes and I was a little worried.

i did the stat analysis too, and i thought it was pretty good. my results were:

Uchicago: Accepted (reach)
Georgetown SFS: Waitlisted (reach)
Middlebury: Accepted (reach)
Grinnell: Accepted (match)
American: Accepted (safety)
Mizzou: Accepted (super safety)
Truman State: Accepted, Full Ride (super safety)
UMichigan: Accepted (match)
Carleton: Waitlisted (slight reach)
Wesleyan: Waitlisted (slight reach)
Claremont McKenna: Rejected (match...but they had like 4,000 apps for about 500 spots)

I think people have the wrong focus when looking for others to assess their chances at a school.

They should stop asking other people for their chances of acceptance and instead work on improving their grades, stats, and more importantly, THEMSELVES so that they are the complete, qualified applicants that these universities want. Stop wasting time on useless things like television, and instead work on school, or meditate on your goals and how better to acheive them.

That being said, it can be hard to find help in this area and thus I can see why this is a great forum to carry out such discussions. I surely don't mind helping someone with these questions, if they are posed by sincere, intelligent people.

By the way, BIG congratulations to those who got accepted at schools that were supposedly "out of reach"!

hellocello, can you post your stats? i'm interested to see how an actual professional analysis compares to the typical chances analysis on here.

so here's what i was told. i think some peopleon this sight are totally full of *****...here we go

how do they pick us??!!!

I was given a "possibly" for Harvard. Of course, that was back when I was still considering applying to Harvard.
