Stanford
University of Washington
University of Michigan
University of Notre Dame
Cornell
Washington University (St. Louis)
Vanderbilt
Gonzaga
Harvard
Duke

I am only a Junior in high school so my resume is far from complete. I know the list is a little lopsided but I need to continue my research on more mid range schools and safe schools. Here is my resume so far

-Chosen to be 1 of 6 on board of state athletic council. Only 6 in the entire state were chosen.

Other:
-I was selected to participate in a 2-day Medical workshop at Stanford over the summer
-I could be a recruited athlete at most of the schools (Stanford might be tough to run for, but it's a possibility)
-I have ideas for essays/recs

Personal:
-I want to double major in Spanish/Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Latin Studies
-Transferred out of my school in 9th grade because of the lack of academics I was searching for (it was my decision)

Please tell me if this is a good start or if I am shooting too high. Also, feel free to recommend any safe or mid-range schools.

Hi! I applied to Cornell and got in this year (last year?). Anyways, I applied for Fall 2013 and got in, as I said before, so that’s really the only once I feel like I should chance you for. That said, this is my opinion:

Your EC’s are great–you are NOT shooting too high. The fact that you have a 4.0 is awesome despite all the other activities you do. I do suggest that you start taking as many AP’s as possible starting junior year, but don’t take more than you can handle! An unweighted 4.0 with a weighted 4.3 is as good as (maybe even better since schools look at your UW) an unweighted 3.9 and a weighted 4.5. So don’t cram in that extra one or two AP class because you feel obligated to. BUT definitely try to challenge yourself; you’ll be surprised at how much you can take on. For your AP tests, obviously try to do as well as possible but don’t be bummed if you don’t get all 5’s (if you get a 3 or 4 but you feel like you know the subject well you could take the subject tests in that area and get a 700+ to compensate). As to your SAT’s, shoot for 2000+ on the real one (you have around a 1910 now so it shouldn’t be too hard to improve). Make sure you take the SAT Subject Tests and get 700+ on them.

When I was applying, it made me feel better (well, sometimes, it made me feel worse but I’m pretty sure it’ll make you feel better in this case) if I knew the person’s stats. So kind of an overview of my stats…

Rank: 12 (it was 17 when I first applied then it changed to 13 for the mid year report)
UW GPA: 3.9-ish
W GPA: 4.6
AP Classes: 12

Decent but not amazing EC’s. I was on board for a club all 4 years, in CSF for 3 years and another community service club for 4 years (both with no board position), volunteered at a hospital and hospice my last year, and interned at a doctor’s office during summer.

Good luck!

Thank you very much for the comments! Unfortunately my school does not practice any special weighting for grades, but I will try to maintain my 4.0. I also just took my 3rd PSAT today and got 207…hopefully this means I can continue on this upward trend.

Also, I am involved in a philanthropy organization where we (a group of teenagers) work together for a year to research and determine what local non-profit deserves a grant. Then we present it to the organization. Do you think this is another good activity to list.

Once again, thank you very much and have tons of fun at Cornell!!

Haha I actually ended up going to UCLA instead of Cornell because of financial aid.

As to your question, you should definitely add everything and anything you have done. However, you need to keep in mind colleges want quality too–not just quantity. That means you do something consistently for several years; you don’t just do this club for one year, quit, then join another club the next year. They want to see commitment to what you do (which was probably why I was ok in EC’s; I kept up with the things I joined). So keep that in mind when you do activities.

Thanks for the info…anyone else have an opinion?

If the college isn’t listed below, it is a reach.

Gonzaga: Aim for 25+/1750+
UMI: Aim for 32+/2150+
UWA: Aim for 29+/2000+
