Chances to : UCB, UCLA, and UCSD

Hrvrd,

have you considered that while Asians may take Chinese, Korean and Japanese for SAT 2, Caucasians and Black people are born with English as their first language? So according to your logic, isn't Verbal and Writing acts of AA towards Caucasians and Blacks?

And have you thought about why Asians have a higher median of income? Its because they worker harder than others and invest wisely while most Caucasains blow their savings on luxuries. So must Asians be 'punished' for working 12 hour days and saving every last penny to pay for their children's education?

The same logic may be applied on why Asians score higher on the SAT. Is it because Asians are born with superior intelligence? I sure hope not. But I do know that while you are watching Monday Night football, Asians are there grinding away with their SAT prep books until midnight.

I don't think AA is a bad idea but its certainly abused here. AA is and should not be against a particular race. Its aim should rather be providing aid to individuals with extraodinary circumstances. The person can be Asian, Caucasian, Black or even Martian, the 'law' is color blind.

Do you know why the Soviet Union made some of the world's heaviest chandeliers that actually would fall from the ceilings? Its because they measured output by mass instead of quality.

And to the OP:

"For one thing, UC gives points to SAT II which include Chinese and Korean. AA for Asians."

Then by your logic, I guess UC gives points to Hispanic, French, Italians, and Germans also? Seriously do you even know what you're talking about?

"Asians on average in the US have $10,000 higher family income which leads to a much higher benefit in high school preparation, SAT scores, college counseling, than the UC low income bonus. Ideas that groups like Asians have a genetic advantage on the SAT have been discredited, so the gap mostly reflects Asian privilege in education."

You think Asians are born with a silver spoon in their mouth? They don't come to America in a private jet. China, Korea, Vietnam, and other Asian countries are all still considered developing countries with many economic disadvantages. Asians come to America with actual intention of pursuing the American dream by working hard and using all the resources they have. The result is that they reap what they sow. You really think they should be punished because they worked hard?

i dont really understand this race thing. so its good to be a minority because they want you in their school (even though affirmitive action is illegal, schools want minority representation) but asians are a minority in the USA, but arent they over-represented in the applications that UCs receive? so would this work for or against me as a white person.

i guess its kinda all (mostly) irrelevent because affirmitive action is illegal for public schools.

any takers?

Asians are over-represented. You're white, so you should be okay; it's not going to hurt you (If you go into something like engineering it'll likely help you compared to equivalent Asians). I'm not sure what difference it'll make when it comes to economics, but not being Asian is almost always a good thing (Though the degree to which it is a good thing can be argued, I think we can all agree that it's best to not be an ORM) when it comes to College admissions (unfortunately).
