Non Competitive 3.5 GPA CC Transfer with TAP Fall 2015

Hello all,

Like most of you seeking answers, I have recently applied just this past app. period for Fall 2015. I only applied to 4 UCs, no Cal States: UCB, UCLA, UCSB, and UCSD as an English major, with alternate major in Asian American Studies where applicable. Realistically, not all of us have competitive GPAs of 3.7-3.9+, so I am posting this on behalf of the underdogs hoping to get into the UC system. My #1 is UCLA. I am concerned of my chances. Listed are some pros and cons (more cons):

Applied with TAP

IGETC + AA-T

Most prereqs. done (except foreign lang. which I took 3 yrs. French in hs. though the app. doesn't ask?)
Will finish last 2 major prep. courses come Spring
Will finish this semester with 3 As, 1 B

2 jobs with one on campus + attempting full time student status resulted in
-two "Ws"
-one F, retook, got a B
*none of these courses are of my major (though I know most UCs admit on cumulative GPA)

Spring 2015 will be my last of 4 yrs in CC with 90+ units. How badly will this elongated stay at CC affect my chances?

Unpaid internships with county: department of behavioral health: Youth Crisis Clinical and Research and Eval. 60+ hrs total
Additional volunteer work with college 40+ hrs

Pres. of environmental club and involved in other clubs on campus
*(I keep reading on here that E.C.s are not even looked at seriously though? Counselors are advising students otherwise, however.)

Personal statement: IDK. Talked about passion in education, then got maybe too honest as I discussed extenuating financial circumstances -low income background, attended multiple elem. schools, moved a lot, low-income neighborhoods, raised in single parent home, both parents lacking secondary education, second gen. Viet. American, balancing 2 jobs to help with bills, etc. etc.

*A professor said my background would actually help my chances? but how true is this?

Peers of mine are concerned with their 3.8+ GPAs and getting in and I'm just sitting here like...really? Look at my case and feel better about yourself!!

When we get decisions I will post where I did and/or didn't get accepted to hopefully help those finding themselves in similar situations as mine.

Any honest outlook on my chances would be incredibly helpful as I hold my breath and wait for 4 months on decisions. Thank you!

TAP will be a big help, since the avg admitted GPA was 3.7 https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof14_mjr.htm#CE</a></p>

If you marked IGETC certified, they know that you’ve completed the minimum language requirement. In the update you might want to note that you took 3 years in HS, not just 2.

Working is good, and its great that you went from an F to a B. UCs don’t care about Ws.

You could have 1000 years and units at CC, UCs don’t care. Your ECs look great, and your prof & counselor are right, leadership is a good thing and ECs are considered. Especially for UCB and UCLA.

Did you TAG anywhere?

@luckie1367 I think only UCSB accepts TAG, and I wish I did so with them, but I only learned about it after the deadline. I definitely thought I missed something on the app regarding my foreign lang. Thanks!!!

I think you’re fine and a competitive candidate, though I don’t see your GPA, unless I missed it? That’s the big question missing here.

Also, did you apply for English at UCLA or Am. lit? The latter might have been the better option, as both majors are practically identical in coursework, yet am lit. has a lower gpa acceptance average.

Everything @luckie1367 said, I agree with. I think you stand a good chance. And definitely put the three years language (perhaps note grade?) from high school in comments on the update.

They will really like your perseverance. That’s one of the big factors - that a student will graduate and not buckle when the going gets tough.

@fullload I currently have a 3.5 hopefully by the end of this semester and the next it will raise to a 3.6 fingers crossed No only as English with Asian American Studies alternate, like they advised me to, thought I felt the latter suited my personal statement and interests more, same prereqs though.

@lindyk8 I’m worried about posting my foreign lang. grades as I definitely got a B, C, C, consecutively. My honors counselor said it was fine, but I wonder if it will hurt me more than help?

TAP, good personal statements, and good ECs can make an applicant a whole lot more competitive. You’re certainly as competitive as anyone with a 3.8 GPA in my humble opinion. Good luck!

@Cayton Thanks! I sure hope so.

I gave a sound, reasonable response and was simply asking what his gpa was, as it IS a factor in giving advice to his question. I also wondered if he applied as a lit major, as this would also change the dynamic of responses.

Post edited by mainelonghorn. How many accts do you have?

Lol, I’m done here. The moment Lindy got back I knew it would end up this way. We’re just oil and water. I’ll be back after she gets her fill of control out of her system and leaves.

Take care everone and good luck with your applications!

all anyone has to do is look through your posts last summer fullload. It’s all up there. You left once before, most dramatically, when you said everyone was ganging up on you after you posted yet another mean comment. But then you came back. I urge anyone not familiar to take a couple hours and go through his posts if you don’t believe me. I don’t have patience for this sort of crap and apologize to all, but I’m not the baddy.

@hpmv13‌ all right, well maybe just say “three years HS language, passing grades”, so they know they won’t be suddenly seeing a D come June.

@hpmv13‌ are you aware that using your HS foreign language for IGETC and for prereqs toward the English major at UCLA, you also need 5 foreign lit in translation courses? Some CCs don’t offer that many! If however you take 1 yr of college level foreign language, you only need two foreign lit in translation courses.

@Happy2Help‌ I figured, and no I haven’t taken any foreign lit in translation courses. I am worried about that hindering my chances at getting in because of those unfinished prereqs…

Your chance for UCLA will increase if you can complete 2 foreign lit in translation courses AND the 2nd semester of French (you already meet the prereq with your HS classes). Remember, most applicants will have completed all these. You can also plan to use summer to complete the courses however they may be harder to find and may become a condition to complete your acceptance.

I have similar stats as yours and I applied this semester too. The only differences are I dnt apply for same major and dnt have any volunteer hours. So be positive bc at least you get one person in the same boat and at least you have more ec than me  at least put down some stress because application was over and you tried hard! Save your mind for the holiday and next semester.
