And sorry, I should have been more clear, UW, as in University of Washington: Seattle.

Thanks again.

UCB: high reach

UCSC: match
UW: high match

UW’s computer science program is extremely competitive and students have to apply for it once they complete the prerequisites. They do have a freshman direct-admit program but students have to have a very high GPA and all SAT section scores have to be over 700 (higher for math).

My daughter and I attended a computer science info. session at the UW and were not impressed with their arrogance. They are a good comp sci school but giving information in their comp sci info session about other majors with similar skill sets and other schools with direct-admit programs in case, after seeing the presentation, students realize they aren’t going to make it into the UW’s program, was a huge turn-off for my daughter (and me).

My daughter ended up at George Washington University where their engineering department is not well-known but they are in the process of building it up and their engineering school is very supportive and inclusive and students get directly into their major as a freshman. She decided to go into systems engineering instead of computer science but she can switch back to comp sci if she decides she really likes it. The best part is that with financial and merit aid, it is less expensive for her to attend GWU than the UW and we are in-state at the UW. Even better is that she is loving it there!
