CHANCES WITH A VERY LOW GPA?? Please Post Colleges, 2.9-3.1 :k

Yeah, didn't really do that great in school.

reap what you sow.
recommend community college and then transfer to a better school.. after you do well in cc.

on the other hand, you still have chances @ state schools.

A GPA of that range will definitely weigh you down somewhat... if you want to shoot for some of the more selective schools I agree with jsberting. If this isn't as much of a problem for you, however, there are many colleges (both public and private) that will accept students with GPAs equal to and below yours. If you'd like a list of colleges that you could look at please answer the questions below (so I know what sort of direction you want to go in) and SAT scores:

What areas of the country you'd like to be in (if you have particular states or cities in mind, include that as well): West, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, Midwest, Northwest, and/or International.

What size of an undergraduate student body you prefer: very small (<1000), small (1000-3000), medium (3000-7000), medium-large (7000-10000), large (10000-15000), and/or very large (15000+).

What sort of environment you're looking for: urban, suburban, and/or rural.

If there's a specific major you're looking for or program (ex: pre-law, pre-med, business, engineering). Do you want more of a liberal arts sort of feel or more of a science/math focus?

SAT scores??

2100 writing 800, others 650 each.

What would be some schools that I could get into?

Look alex, dont let the last two posters discourage u by telling u ur doomed. of course u can get into a selective school with a 3.0! whoever tells u otherwise is on crack!
I had a 3.1 and i applied to the following schools:
Ohio State, UMiami (Yes UMiami which everyone told me was going to be a total rejection), Indiana, Michigan State, Loyola, American University, Purdue and got into every single one of them with a scholarship at Ohio State, Purdue based on my SAT scores.

Do Well on ur SATs like say 1100+ (CR+M) and ur fine for a ton of selective schools. Also I sent a ton of stuff. I sent 3 essays, a letter telling my first choice school my strong desire, a 4 pg resume of excellent Ec's, 4 excellent letters of reference including a letter from owner of my school, guidance counselor, director of high school and a teacher. so yea send a ton of appealing background info to let the school know u went to a tough competetive school (if in fact u did).

Ill give u a list of schools: assuming u get at least a 3.0 and 1100 SAT (M+CR)

Reach: Umiami, Boston University, Fordham, Loyola, American, Northeastern, Ohio State, Michigan State, Syracuse, Texas A&M

Match: University of Tennessee, Purdue, Indiana, Missouri, Vermont, Florida State, NC State, New Hampshire, Miami U (Ohio)

Safety: Arizona, Arizona State, Cal State schools, a ton of other school. Dont put too many safeties.

LOOK I know most CC'ers are gonna attack and slaughter my post cause they are all pessimistic, but believe me, u have a good shot at selective schools.
Im happy with the schools i picked, and will gladly be going to UMiami this fall, but at the beginning everyone in CC was telling me a ton of the schools I was applying to were all reaches and at the end of the day I got into all of them and some with scholarships based on SAT scores. Listen to me even though I sound too optimistic. :D I hope i helped

forgot to mention:

Reach means according to me: 50% shot. the stats at those schools dont fit ur profile at all nor did they fit mine but if u send them a strong application on the whole u should get into at least one of them.

Match means according to me: 75% chance

Safety: 85%-99% chance.

ur ideal list of schools should consists of:
4 reaches, 4 matches (mayby 5 if u got enough money to waste on apps) and finally 1 or 2 safeties at the most.
dont load it with safeties just to feel comfortable. pick for the safety a school that u like but that just by getting into a match school, the safety immediately is off the board. putting more than one safety is a waste of time cause ur more than likely not gonna go to ur safety.

You know, something that I have always hated about this site is that people think that if you don't have a 4.0/2400 (which it amazes me everytime I come on this site that there are oh, so many people on here with these perfect scores), then you are not getting into a good college. And by good college, that only includes HYPS, ivies, and Top 20 schools. Honesly, there are 100s of good colleges in the county. Just because you don't have a stellar GPA does not mean that you are going to a community college, come on. Say you didn't have a good SAT score, you would still find a college that you like, and other people will think is a good school. Good luck, and congrats to acarta07.

Alex you definetly don't need to go to a communty college.

Some of my friends got a 2.8 GPA 1000 SAT scores and got into FSU.

Acarta07 is right--there are lots of good schools you would be able to get into with that great SAT score and a 2.9 to 3.1 GPA, especially if you've taken any honors courses (many school consider your weighted GPA much more than your unweighted GPA).

A school which I would add to Acarta07's list is Oregon (excellent for business and education majors)--and which is probably a Safe Match (halfway between Safety and Match).

Also, Ohio State and Michigan State are about halfway between a Match and a Reach for you (Slight Reach?).

Lastly, Miami (Florida) will be very difficult, despite what was said by Acarta07. But your SATs will make a huge difference there, unlike other equivalent schools such as Penn State, which concentrate almost exclusively on GPA.

Other than that I agree with Acarta07's list, which is an excellent list of suggested colleges to match your stats.

Best of luck.

No one I've heard of got into FSU with a 2.8/1000 unless they are a talented athlete, musician, something that makes them quite special. I have heard of kids with 1150s, 3.5s getting Summer or being wait listed.

My son was admitted to a top 20 LAC with a 3.0 unweighted, 3.5 weighted
SATs 1300 (old scale)---don't be discouraged--write an excellent application,
try to improve your grades for your remaining time in HS and make sure you
have a well balanced college list of safeties, match and reach schools

The list I gave is imo wuite strong but if he dosnt like the locations of all the schools, cuz most were in the east coast (im an east coaster so i know more bout that area) I found a list from US News.
Im sure ive heard of it:
its calles A+ schools for B kids:
most of the schools i mentioned are on that list except UM and i think Boston U. But I personally would still apply to both of those cause those schools dont only look at grades and SAT scores. they literally loook at the whooole picture which helps applicants tremendously and makes it more fair to the applicant.

Thank you guys, ACARTA THANKS!!!

Ppl here all have like 4.0 gpas and 2100+ SAT scores and now I'm just glad that there are few who actually have my scores...

thanks calcruzer, you responded!!

I just want to give thanks to everyone who responded!!

So when I go to collegeboard and see ppl who get into like emory with a 3.0, they probably have a 2400 sat score?

Alot may be recruits or highly-talented individuals.

I have a 3.2 after having a great senior year (3.67/3.55/3.83) and I got into a top 40 LAC/top 100 school. I was just very lazy in highschool because I wasn't interested or motivated. Just do well from now on and show te schools you can are smart.

Yea, from now on, I must do good. Must do excellent. Any other suggestions?

yea your not doomed my bro had a 3.16 and 26 on the ACT and got into
loyola university at chicago
UIC
purdue

places like that

are you any good in sports?
