Chances with alright Stats?

Stats:

Rank: 53/389 (top 15%)

GPA: Unweighted-3.39 weighted-4.03/4.69

SAT: 710 CR, 690 Math, 580 Writing

SAT2s: Bio 740; Math I 710 World Histry 680

APs: (9 total)
Sophmore: AP Chem (3) and AP World history (4)
Junior: AP Bio (5), AP Stats (4), and AP US history (4)
Senior: AP Physics B (TBD), AP Calc AB (TBD), AP Gov (TBD), and AP Psych (TBD)

ECs: Math Club (Captain) , Varsity Swimming (Captain), YMCA Club Swimming, Kung-Fu until 11th grade, volenteered at local library for 3 years, founding member of my Model UN group, Varsity Tennis

Academic Awards: Nat’l Honor Society, AP Scholar w/ Distinction

Note: I know most of my stats are low, but I feel that’s because of the 9 AP courses I’ve taken. Many students don’t take 2 APs their sophmore year so idk if that would give me an edge. And while my GPA is only a 3.39, weighted it jumps .64, which I feel an average person’s GPA wouldn’t.

I think that in order to be accepted, a student must make up for low numbers through ECs and essays. Not that your service & ECs aren’t OK (they are fine), but from looking at them I can’t tell what it is your passionate about/what you want to study at BC. (Plus you didn’t provide that information.)

How do you feel about your application essay? Confident or not so much?

Based on the GPA and SAT score, I would say not a good shot.

OK yea I figured that. My essay was about a time when my moms blood sugar dipped too low (diabetic) and how I grew from that, so pretty confident.

Would it be a hook if I’m right near Boston in MA? (Cape Cod)

I think you have a decent shot, your test scores are good and your course rigor is good. It is going to depend on how your school does gpa. Some schools weight honors courses the same as AP’s so your GPA may be lower than someone who took a less rigorous course load. Don’t sweat it, you have good stats you will go somewhere great.

Are you sure that’s the right rank? Your rank 53 with a 3.39? Your school must not be very competitive. I have a 3.69 unweighted and im rank 90 / 315.

If it’s weighted rank, and your 53 with 4.03, then your school must be crazy competitive.

Pseven, our Valedictorian has a 4.69 weighted and is going to Princeton

Any other ideas?

Dear mikewall : Your unweighted GPA at 3.39 is obviously your major statistical hurdle. A second less major issue exists with your writing score at 580 which is well entrenched in the bottom quartile of the accepted class.

As you have seen in other threads, 80% of the admitted class is Top 10% from their High Schools … and 96% are from the Top 25%. Therefore, your application is falling into that 16% second tier of rankings.

Now, you have to overcome all of these shortfalls in your application with a crafty essay and an enumeration of strong coursework. Your AP curriculum is strong with hard science, mathematics, english, and history covered. Many top students in the applicant pool will have advanced placement courses in their sophomore year, so there is limited advantage to be gained there.

Your leadership positions are named without any reference to their impact at your school or in your community. Are there interesting factors there for consideration? What type of team spirit or leadership comes through your swimming?

All of this said, your 1400 SAT two-way is a good headline on your profile. Up in some areas, down in others, your final profile is just too completely mixed to offer a sure thumbs-up or sure thumbs-down. [However in an applicant pool of 30,000, not standing out as a sure thumbs-up tends to mean a rejection.] Let’s hope your essay really hit a homerun.

Best wishes and good luck in your collegiate chase.
