Chances?

Hi. I am an out-of-state student, Alabama, and I was just wondering if you guys could see what kind of chances I have for the University of Oregon. Here are my stats:
GPA - 3.4 unweighted and a 3.7 weighted.
ACT - Taking it this Saturday, but on the practice test I have gotten between 25-28's with interruptions because I am taking them at home.
EC's - I am involved in 3-4 clubs.
Community Service - I plan on doing some during the summer.
I have always taken college prep. and honors courses. I will have honors and an AP class on my senior schedule. So what do you think my chances are? Thanks!

Assuming your high school post your weighted GPA on your transcript, you should probably be an auto-admit.

So how does it happen that you’re applying to a school so far from Alabama?

There will be no guaranteed admit policy next year, but you should still be an easy admit with your weighted GPA.

That’s interesting! There’s still information on the website about automatic admission. Tulare, do you have any idea where I can track down info about the change next year? I know a number of students who are assuming it will still be in place.

I hope it’s still in place. And yes my school posts the weighted on my transcript along with my unweighted. And I was just interested in Oregon and stumbled upon their auto-admit. Why would they take it away if they just say you have to have a 3.4 to be auto-admitted? That makes no sense to change something to make it more selective and then just cancel all together.

They got a record number of qualified applications this year, probably due to the national exposure they got due to the BCS. They can only admit so many students, and the guaranteed admit policy forces them to evaluate students on numbers alone. A 3.4 at one school is not equal to a 3.4 at another. So by doing away with the policy they will have more flexibility to holistically evaluate applicants. I’m not sure when they will announce the change, but I have it from a very reliable source.

To be clear, the policy changes for students applying for Fall 2012, not Fall 2011.

Thanks, Tulare. That’s useful information to have. Quite a while ago I heard they were going to raise the auto-admit GPA for exactly the reasons you mention, but that they’ll get rid of auto-admit altogether is quite a different kind of change!

When my daughter applied to UO she was just happy her GPA meant no essay. We didn’t know there is an auto-admit policy. That said, we still haven’t heard from them one way or another yet. Glad to hear someone is applying from Alabama tho- her top reason to consider UO was because they had more OOS admits than our publics here in CA.

Yeah I’m considering it because I’ve lived in Florida, Ohio, and now Alabama and I’ve never been out west so it would be a nice change of scenery. Although if I get accepted to one of the colleges that I’m applying to in Florida they will be my favorites because that’s where I want to end up. Can I ask what stats your daughter had? Thanks.

Wow, Oregon and Florida! Very different kinds of places. If the west coast is interesting, but Florida is your ideal, then you’d be best off looking in the San Diego area of California.

I think Florida and Oregon appeal to people with VERY different tastes in just about every way! (Speaking as a resident of Oregon, with a husband from Florida, and having been raised in southern California.)

Lol I just think it would be cool to experience it because you never know, I may end up loving Oregon if I go there and never leave. Southern California wouldn’t be bad when I get a job after graduating, but as a 20 year old in college the cost of living would be WAY to high I think :/.

I think Oregon is a wonderful place. Eugene is a great college town. It rains a lot. It’s a really fun school, I think. You’d probably love it.

Sweet! Let’s hope I actually get auto-admitted first before I get too excited lol.

Coming from norcal- many of my classmates applied to Oregon as a “back-up” even though they would, of course, be accepted to their top choices. I know of at least 6 people who applied just because but have already committed to San Fran State, Cal Poly, San Diego State, Colorado-Boulder. It’s just sad because a lot of people actually want to go there, but these students, who know for sure they would never end up at Oregon, applied.
