Chances?

Thanks for reading this.

Now, compared to everyone else on this site, I look like i don't belong but i wanted to get some serious chances on my UConn application

I go to Rutgers Prep which is one of the top private schools in the state of NJ.

GPA: 3.0 ..yes i know its horrible. let me explain at the end.

SAT I: 690 Math, 670 CR, 680 WR

Finally, the explanation for my GPA. i really want to know if this will make a difference to them...

My freshman year, I missed about a half year of school when my mother passed away from a brain tumor. The two years after that, i spend in and out of different psychologists office to help me recover from this. my grades suffered greatly and i couldn't focus in school. This year, the first quarter, i have picked it up and tried to get myself together.

Will UConn actually read this and understand and take it into consideration or will they just see my GPA and turn me away?

Namon…of course they will take this into consideration…I hope you clearly made them aware of your special circumstance…and I wish you good luck! I pray that good things come your way!

That will be taken under consideration. What has your course rigor been? (APs, IB, etc)

I will have taken a total of 7 APs by the end of this year. 2 soph, 2 junior and 3 senior year.

They will read it BUT they have a huge volume of apps and a overworked admissions team so you need to really make your application stand out . I would suggest you tour campus, contact dept chair(s) of majors u r interested in, find a local UCONN grad you can speak with … also on the application there is an area for special circumstances so make sure you explain your situation. Given you are attending a great Prep school I am sure your guidance counselors will know how to make sure your situation is documented . Also they will make sure your app is complete such as the obvious question here on # of APs etc …

Your situation may require application to many schools just to be safe so do not limit your field…

BTW your ECs are very impressive !

Good Luck !!

I have applied to many schools. My transcript should send APs i believe. My quesetion is…do i have an average chance? or is there none at all. My SATs are good and so are my ECs.

This is why i ask.

Judging just from your post, I would say you have a slightly better than average chance, assuming an upward GPA trend.

sorry for the loss of your mother. and honestly 3.0 is NOT bad at all! you’ll probably get in

Thank you all for the chances. And yes, ThePhilosopher, there is a HUMONGOUS upward trend in my GPA. That should help out my situation alot. I should be hearing any day now. My application was completed on November 2nd, 2011, and it seems that many people around that time are beginning to find out.
