chances

I have a 10.9 out of 12 GPA at my high school. This is out of a 12 beign A+. I got a 32 on ACT and a 2130 on SAT. I have pretty good extra carriculars and very good recommendations. What are my chances of an Ivy Leaugue School?

Your chances probably improve if you pick one extracurricular and achieve very strongly in it.

Quesion is how much community service have you done?

You need to raise your test scores. On the SAT, your chances will go up if you can get two out of three in the 750+ range. You also need 3 SAT IIs in that range for the best chance. ACT of 34+ is good as well. Class rank can be an issue as well. Is your 10.9 top 10%, top 5%, top 3 students? What courses did you take? 10.9 with no honors or APs doesn't look as good as a strong course selection. The easiest way to guage your chances is to go through the accepted/rejected threads for EA and RD. The EA thread is up now. The RD thread will be up on April 01.

Do you reckon Harvard rate community service over a lot of other ECs? Siimply because it is a community thing, as opposed to something you simply do for yourself?

Community service really isn't that important. It's very nice to do it, but the myth that you can't get into college without oodles of community service is just that, a myth.

Harvard doesn't expect a student with a well-formed interest in an area to have also done a ton of volunteerwork, and likewise, someone who spends hours and hours doing community service isn't necessarily a desirable admit.

I had done not too much volunteerwork in high school, because I had two other major extracurriculars that took up a lot of time. And when I did do community service, it was in an area that I have original interest in--environmentalism.

Would they see Grade 7 in an instrument as a 'high standard', or are they looking for people with diplomas and who are just bloody incredible?
