I think we’ll have a better idea in a few weeks. One of the big questions to be answered is whether being test-optional only results in the SAT/ACT becoming even more of a hook? The theory goes that because only people who score high will be motivated to submit their scores the result is that those people tend to be the first to be picked. It’s only a theory, but it’s worth noting that about 80% of last year’s class consisted of people who submitted scores. Again, it may only be a corollary that people with high scores stand out in other ways, too, but right now and especially as an RD applicant, you are in the “it’s a crapshoot for everybody” territory.
When I look at Wesleyan’s 2015-2016 common data set, their avg SAT scores (25%-50%-75%) for ENROLLED students is 1880-2050-2220. However, if you look at their admissions page, they list stats for ADMITTED students as 2070-2200-2320. This indicates to me that a lot of top students with top scores are applying to Wesleyan (maybe as a safety?) then choosing to go somewhere else, leaving Wesleyan to enroll lower stat kids.
So if you’re a kid with, say, a 2150 SAT, which would be at the top end of the enrolled, but the bottom end of the admitted, what should you do? Go test optional or submit?
We’ll have a better idea in a few weeks.
@mjrube94 - It’s still early (the first day of acceptances) but, it would certainly appear that the majority of admits are copping to SATs in the 2150 or above range.
Thanks @circuitrider. She’s going to take the ACT in June to see if she has better results. Otherwise, she’ll take her chances with her SATs. Thanks for the input!
I’d definitely say still submit your scores in that range. They won’t help or hurt you. GPA, school profile and EC will matter much more.
