Chances

What are my chances of getting in if I have two C’s on my transcript. I took AB Calculus this year along with AP Chemistry, AP English, AP US History, and Latin III Honors, and much to my disappointment received all A’s and a C the first semester in Calc and a C+ the next semester in Calc. My grades suffered a lot this year with a lot of personal issues, my grandfather died, my father lost his job, I had back surgery, my brother attempted suicide, and my sister was in and out the hospital with heart issues due to her ADD medications which I was also diagnosed with this year. I got a 34 on the ACT. I am an excellent writer, so I don’t think I’ll have issues writing stellar essays since my passion for the school of Human Ecology is so great. This year I will be taking AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Physics, AP Latin, and AP US Government making my totally amount of APs taken in high school 10 (AP World sophomore year-4 on exam). I am president of Latin club, am heavily involved in Biology and Environmental club, started the knitting club at my school (we knit blankets for relaxation and send the finished products to the women’s shelter), and speak sign language and sign at my local church. I am currently taking a Pyschology course at Cornell over the summer as well. I also play year round club volleyball and school varsity volleyball and am on the club beach volleyball team.

ALSO: My unweighted GPA is 3.87 and I’m in the top 10 percent of my class. If I don’t live in New York will that hurt my chances for Human Ecology?

You’ll be fine, just give it a shot.

Real talk. It isn’t all about the logistics of your life. Consider this: you’re a teenager with a very small and, honestly, lackluster resume in the real world. Just like the plethora of other applicants, you have potential, and its pretty tough see anything beyond that in undergrad admissions. Ask yourself, is it really possible to look at a teen and say “oh he’s going to cure cancer?” Surely you can say they work hard, get good grades, etc… but really nothing more can be deduced.

Be content with being “up there” and a “good student” because a shot is as much as your going to get (as with anyone).

I do not want to be cold, as I often come off as, but you need to take a chill pill. DM me if you want more advice or insight on my college admissions experience.
