Chances?

Hello, I'm Alyssa. I'm a junior, and i live in Michigan. I'm planning on being pre-med and majoring in chemistry.

I'm just wondering you think my chances of getting into Johns Hopkins are. I go to an average public school in Michigan. We have a pretty strict curriculum, with lots of required classes that usually push AP classes until senior year.

GPA - 4.0
Rank: 1/323 (there are about 10 other number ones though. my school does not do weighted GPA's at all. so we are all tied with 4.0's.)

I took the ACT last December and got a 29. I'm retaking it in june, and it looks like I'll make something around a 31.

My school doesn't offer honors or enriched classes.

I also took anatomy at the local community college for a semester. I’m not sure, but I think it’s worth 3 or 4 credit hours. I did get an A in this class.

Extra-Curriculars
Mentoring program at local junior high(11th). Tutoring at local Junior High(11th). Tutoring at local elementary school(11th). About 30 other volunteering hours of things like river cleanup, Zoo Boo, Bell Ringing, and ushering(11th). President of the Japanese club(10th and 11th). National Honor Society. Science Olympiad(11th). Student of the month in U.S. history(10th) and chemistry(11th).

I’ve also been accepted into a 2 week medical program at Kalamazoo College this summer. It’s very competitive getting in. 14 students are chosen for it.

I’m going to be doing research at Western University this summer in chemistry.

And I’ve had a steady job shelving books at my local library for about a year.

Thanks for reading! You all seem pretty helpful, so I hope that I can get some advice.

Your chances look pretty good, considering all of your credentials.

You are very qualified. You still might not get in because well, college admissions officers, they can get a little unpredictable. But everything looks great. I'm a little jealous.

go for it!

Apply early decision and check out what JHU looks particulary in prospective students. <a href="http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=808&profileId=1%5B/url%5D">http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=808&profileId=1</a>
I will be apply to JHU as well (ED) and look forward toward the pre-med programs and major in biology/chemistry. Hope to see you there.

Thanks a lot for all the feedback. Obviously, a lot goes into the admissions process, and i might not be accepted for whatever reason, but it's good to know that I'm atleast in the running.

never hurts to try right?

Just to mention that the college board link provided by RHSstudent07 is outdated by more than a year. For the most updated information about the admissions process at Hopkins, you should read old posts of the Hopkins Insider blog (<a href="http://hopkins.typepad.com/)%5B/url%5D">http://hopkins.typepad.com/)</a>. I specifically recommend reading the posts in December and January and this one especially: <a href="http://hopkins.typepad.com/hopkins_insider/2006/01/three_months_of.html%5B/url%5D">http://hopkins.typepad.com/hopkins_insider/2006/01/three_months_of.html</a></p>

Wow, I'm completely jealous. To me, you look like exactly what they are looking for. You have wonderful EC's that really seem to demonstrate your interests and you definately took advantage of the opportunities available to you: the medical program, your job and your research. All while maintaining your gpa. The only thing that I see missing is the SAT, but I guess up north the ACT makes up for that. Yeah, Bring up your ACT a couple notches, and you're definately in the running. Keep it up, Alyssa

You can't take Calc AB and BC in the same year. Well... the tests at least
