Extracurriculars (summary):
- VERY strong Speech and Debate (VP)
- Literary Magazine (editor in chief)
- Junior Statesmen of American (president)

Fluent in Russian (native language). Lots of experience as a debate teacher (summer job). LOTS of debate.
Good essays.

scores are high, debate is strong... do you have anything else? as a speech and debate person myself, i want to beleive that's all it takes, but it's not. where schools are you hoping for? and when you say STRONG debate, exactly how strong?

By strong debate, I mean state and national qualifier, partially qualified to the tournament of champions (last year), one of the top in california, + lots lots lots of local awards.

I'm not sure what else I've "got." I write, so all of my activities have to do with it in some way. I take a lot of APs - in total for high school, 9.

Oh, if it helps any, I'm applying ED.
Chances?

a slightly odd question, but are you a first/second generation immigrant? that would certainly help chances, just as a thought. i can't pretend to know what your chances really are, but i would guess that hyp would like to see something beyond debate, despite obvious and impressive success. are you a junior or senior (i.e., is there any chance of you winning/qualifying for nat tournies this year?)

hm, first generation means that you're born in the US? In that case, my kids will be first generation American =) I've got a nice college essay on that.

wait, rereading that, that didn't make sense. I was born in Russia. We came to American when I was young.

I'm not applying to HYP - Pomona is sincerely my first choice, hence the ED. I'm a senior, and there's a good chance that I'll have competetive success - when I start competing. (I've been so overwhelmed with apps that debate got ignored.) What type of debate do you do?
