chances?

Can anyone chance me here for Duke? This is a reach/dream school for me!

First Generation, low-income
Asian Male, California

SAT: 2100 (650 M, 740 CR, 710 W)
GPA: 4.3 weighted, 3.89 unweighted
Rank: 6/412
SAT II: 730 US history, 700 Math II
Course Load: Took all AP courses that my school's schedule allows
Senior course: all AP and honors except 1 class

ECs: pretty weak.
Student leader in church youth group
Black belt and student instructor in martial arts
officer in two school clubs
Piano certificate of merit advanced/senior award
Congressional Page in House of Representatives

Teacher and counselor recs: Good, I hope!
Essays: good, i think..

I really dont' think I have a shot, but still chance me!

I have a black belt too. Let's fight sometime.

You didn't get raped by the Florida representative did you?

ANYway... Your stats look almost similar to mine and I got in ED, so take from that what you want...

No, I did not get raped by Foley. I thought he was pretty cool until the scandal broke out.

Anyways, bluedevil, that gives me some hope! Does being from SC help a bit though, b/c I know being from NC is a big help. Thanks.

You're from SC? Me too!

Yes I belive it does help just like being from NC. They're always looking for kids from the Carolinas... I was at a Duke admissions talk a couple years ago, up in Greenville, and our regional admissions director said that being from SC is a bonus to the application.

More advice to you would be to retake the SATs, they look like one of the weakest parts.

im from greenville south carolina and ive been looking at duke especially at collegeconfidential... ive gotten a lot of good feedback from youi bluedevil... seeing that your from south carolina as well, would u be able to chance me really quick. I am dead set on applying to DUKE ED and its pretty much my dream. You'll see that my EC's are definetly stellar as well as the GPA, but as far as the SAT goes ive been doing terrible so far.. any input would help since your a fellow south carolinian and got into duke ed.:

Location: Large High School in South Carolina of around 2300 students

Ethnicity: Indian (I love my origins, but not when it comes to applying….)

Performance:
GPA: UW: 4.0 W: 5.2
Rank 3 out of 660 (I hope I can improve, but I predict the large class will slowly dwindle)
AP Classes: Human Geography, World History, Statistics, Calculus AB, English Language, US History, Government, Computer Science, Biology, Physics, English Literature, Economics, Phsycology, Spanish

Standardized Testing:
Now here is my weakness, I have taken the Sat and Psat when they have not really counted, but it seems that I always do poorly in them. No matter how hard I try I can't seem to do well.
I took the SAT II World History and got a 610
As far as Sat's and Act's I am taking a Kaplan course this summer but I am still very worried that my SAT's can really hurt me. I am predicting hopefully along the range of a 1350 to 1400.

Extra-Curriculars:
Speech and Debate: Event Chair last year, Co- Captain this year, National Forensic Leage National Qualifier, Outstanding Distinction Degree 1000 pts, All-American.
I really want to emphasize leadership in everything I do, especially with Speech and Debate. My event is Student Congressional Debate and it teaches you so much leadership and speaking abilities, I have noticed so much improvement. Furthermore the National Forensic League emphasizes the leadership that comes with student congress

Boy Scouts of America: Several Leadership positions b/c it is mandatory. Eagle Scout

National Honor Society and Beta Club: Running for Leadership positions next year for both.

Youth Leadership Program of Greenville Chamber of Commerce: This is the first year they have started this program so I don't know much about it, but it is very selective and I have been admitted

Crew leader at Ice Cream Shop for 3 years

Started my own business: Built websites for a few companies and fixed and built computers with friends

im sure youve chanced be before, and thanks again for all your input in the past. i just think since youve gone through the same thing as i am now yuou would beable to help me a lot.

Glad to be of assistance, nmehta and lhDCpage06!

nmehta- Your GPA is exactly the same as mine (W & UW). I also am an Eagle Scout and have similar ECs. So do well on the SATs, write good essays, and apply ED and I'm confident that you be a part of the Duke class of '12 (right? you are a high school junior now?).

yea im a junior, though im having a lot of trouble on the sat's... i may go ahead and start concentrating on the ACT and hope for the best. I think if im lucky i could manage a 30, im just a terrible standardized test taker, thanx though

hi I'm also from SC (columbia) and I was wondering about my chances as well...the thing that really scares me is my GPA...which is quite low and I heard Duke cares a lot about GPA...so if anyone can tell me what I can expect out of RD taht would be great.

ACT Composite: 35, SAT IIs: Math II: 800, Chem: 750
GPA: 4.4 on the South Carolina Uniform Grading Scale (which is out of 4.87), so that's like a 3.6 Unweighted (yea i know...freshman year had a few Cs :( )...but I did take all honors and by the end of senior year, will have taken 7 APs (4s on Chem and Euro)

Also my school has not sent someone to duke in a few years although I think 2 or 3 have been accepted in the last few years...

and also I've heard that Duke offers a full ride to about 10 people from NC/SC...is this true?

i also did not send in the duke supplement by the 10th...so does not have an interview hurt your chances as well?

It only helps...just hope and pray...it's sometimes random as to who gets in and who doesn't. I have two friend who both applied to Duke and Harvard and one got into Harvard, rejected by Duke; the other got rejected by Harvard but in to Duke.

yea they offer the benjamin duke scholorship to 10 nc/sc students which is a full ride and they also offer the trinity scholorships as well. very tough scholorships though based on service/leadership/character

lol now this just turned into a what are MY chances thread.

Anyone else care to chance the OP? :)

how did u become a congressional page in the house?

Shobhit- You were on that Penn State math team with a good friend of mine who is now at Duke.

Awesome ACT score, however if you are going to submit that they won't look at your perfect Math IIC SAT2 score. I think you have a definite shot at Duke.

i think i know who you're talking about ;)

To become a Congressional page, you have to apply through your congressman. There are about 70 House page spots per school year, and about twice as many for 3 week sessions during the summer, and there are obviously 435 Congressional districts, so its very competitive. Democrats go more on seniority of each member, while republicans rotate members who can sponsor. Contact your representative's office and ask for information, and show genuine interest! GOod luck.

Anyone else care to chance me?!

Hey Shobhit what high school do you go to? I'm from Columbia too and I go to Duke.
If you are who I think you are and you go where I think you go (ACF), how are Mr. R and the big E Joiner doing?

And don't worry, (Jim?) IB doesn't help for **** if you get into Duke. I thought I was smart until I got here and saw everyone else.
