Chances?

This is the first post (obviously) I'm making here, but I've been lurking for a bit. I've been too shy to ask my chances before, but eh...why not? My GPA isn't high, and my SAT scores are eh, but I dunno, I felt up to asking...

I'm a junior at a public school in CT, quite competitive--- top 100 in the country. I'm really "into" English, math is NOT my thing. I'm trying to get something I've written published, and am starting to look into contacting an editor.

SAT: 1770 (640 V 640 W 490 M)
I've begun to study for the ACT and already, those scores look to be more promising.

I'd appreciate any input. Thank you!

im from ct too...where are you from?

you have alright stats-- not great not terrible- but your math score is below avg so try to raise that- you also have decent ECs

i know what its like to be in a competitive connecticut public school-- your grades arent terrible but really theyre just average maybe above--
i couldnt chance you on anything though since you gave no colleges-- what schools are you interested in and ill help you out

Wilton High?
Oh, I thought 'cos it was in the NYU thread that it was assumed...right now I guess my list is...

Safe-
UConn
Allegheny
Ithaca

Harder/Impossible-
NYU
Brown (I can dream, right?)
Hamilton
Boston University
Brandeis
Carnegie Mellon (another dream)

I'm hoping to get in more on EC's...also interview-wise, I tend to make a better impression. I just feel that if I can do something incredible w/ my writing then it will really show something. Also, if you have any input, I'm scheduled to take the SAT Subj Tests this weekend, and ACT the following weekend. The ACT seems SO much easier, and I'm worried that colleges will see my SAT Subj Scores and it wont look good. Would it be better to knock off the subj tests and just do the ACT, as worse case scenario, I could take the Subj tests next yr?
Thanks!!

anyone haev an idea?

Your EC's are pretty good and based on what you've said, your teacher recommendations are also quite good. The only things that could keep you out of NYU are your scores. If you take the ACT, NYU's range is 27-31, so try and score somewhere in that area.

What division in NYU are you applying to? Schools like Tisch and Steinhardt focus more on ECs while CAS and Stern focus more on SAT/ACT and GPA (from what I've heard).

CAS probably, something in Journalism, maybe with a Creative Writing Major....and if I did the journalism major, I'd have to double....could one do a double major and a minor or is that extraordinarily difficult?

DEFINITELY work on the SAT scores. The average score out of 1600 for CAS is in the mid to high 1300s, and you've got a 1130 out of 1600. Since you're from CT, and there are a lot of us from CT who apply for NYU, you don't want to be much below the average, since it's far more competitive here than say, Wyoming.

Your classes look good. I'm assuming you took the most challenging courses you could, though. (Not sure how many APs your school offers, but you've got some, so...) For the most part, your grades are okay. I can't really say, because I never really paid attention to the grades part of applications.

ECs... good, but really try for that leadership position in Amnesty Int. NYU likes leadership, I think. And try to do some more in-school activities, rather than just your summer programs.

It's your choice when you want to take the SAT IIs, though I recommend taking them right after you take the class of the subject, if there is a class.

EDIT: Or, yeah, you can take the ACTs. But if you decide to stay with the SATs, they need to go up. Especially the math.

Oh, and slightly off-topic: UConn is getting difficult to get into. Especially for next year and the year after that. I have friends who are being forced to commute to side campuses (like Waterbury or whatever), and their stats a few years ago would have landed them in Storrs easily. Careful with UConn. Their average SAT score has climbed into the 1800+/2400 range, and since you're from a competitive high school...

I agree with Hepstar...you should take the ACT and try to get into the 27-31 range, good luck with everything!
