Chances?

Hi all,
My son is going to be a senior, will do senior year in a medical intro program, and take AP Bio, AP Calculus and AP English Lit and Language in his home school. His averages were 94 in 9th grade, 92 in 10th grade, and 89 in 11th grade, with an 81 in Honors Pre-Calc. He has gone above and beyond what the school offers, skipping a year of history, taking the AP US History in 10th (he got a 5 on the test.)

His SATs were not great: 640 Language, 650 Math, 550 Writing, PSATs were better, I think the prep class got him thinking strategy instead of just taking the test (he is a good test taker.) He took the ACT totally cold, got a 32 composite, English 30, Math 31, Science 34, Reading 33, Combined English/Writing 28. He may retake in September.

Extra-curriculars:
-10th to 12th Skiing, will be Captain 12
-9th to 12th Soccer, will be Captain 12
-9th to 12th baseball
-Academic Quiz Bowl, 10th, 11th, and will do it next year: qualified for Nationals 10th and 11th
-Effective Schools 11th, 12th
-School Play 11th
-Band 9th, 10th, 11th, will do it 12th
-National Honor Society

-Volunteer 130 hours area ski team
-Volunteer math tutor 30 hours
- President Rotary Club, for 12th Grade
- Odyssey of the Mind, 9th, 10th
I know there are some more activities, but I cannot remember them yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much,
Adigal

I think your son may be undershooting. He seems qualified to over-qualified. SInce his ACT score is so good, he doesn't need to worry about the SAT anymore. 32 is a great composite score and most schools require one or the other or optional (Bowdoin and Bates). This will be an exciting year for your son, so have fun. I would be more interested in him addressing why his grades have declined year after year rather than thinking about testing. I know the easy answer is the difficulty of the classes he has taken, but he might want to give it some thought in case it comes up in interviews.

I think his grades have declined because he has been bored out of his mind in school for 12 years - yes, I know, no excuse. I am very disappointed in what he has allowed to happen. But we live in a rural area, and cannot afford prep school, so we have tried to challenge the school to allow him to take coursed above his head. High school has been tough for him, challenge wise. I know college will be better. :)

Thanks for the input - I appreciate it.

My son will be entering Wheaton Class 2011 in one week. We put enormous research and effort into the search. My son was a very strong college applicant,student/athlete. Wheaton was my son's first choice for many reasons which I will share with you if you like. You can call me on my cell 401-741-0800 anytime up to 8:00 pm EST. My name is Tom Paolino

To add to my previous post. Wheaton is sat/act optional but we were told by an admissions officer at an info session for a large group last fall that the writing score, if submitted, would not be reviewed because Wheaton does not consider a writing sample under that kind of pressure and time constraint on a subject not of your chosing a reliable indicator of writing skills.
