•I lived in Guatemala for about 14 years. I moved to the U.S. for 10th grade. I realized that my current school’s curriculum is way harder/stronger than that of the school I attended back in Guatemala. Although not a straight A’s student, I tried my best to pull a decent GPA while adapting to my new life in the US.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Yeah youll get in. Given you're a minority and your change in residence from guatemala, I'm sure a school like Bentley looks for diversity. Also, theyll take into account your adjustment when they look at your gpa.

I'd say in with a 1/3 scholarship.

yup, you'll get in with at least a 1/3 scholarship, maybe stretching for 1/2 tuition scholarship. i guess the relevant question now is:

why in the &$^#ing world are you thinking about coming to bentley?

bentley is for a certain type of student, and im not saying you aren't, but every asian-american freshman who i've talked to has already put in applications to transfer out of bentley, and they couldn't do it fast enough.

i'll say for the record right now that bentley is good academically in finance and accounting, but the lifestyle here is, IMO, very very bad. the actual number of students who have seriously thought about transferring out of bentley is enormous, but very few go through with it in the end because a lot of bentley's specialized business courses do not transfer.

save yourself the hassle, apply UC schools and USC.

thanks for the infor, krazyk

wow is bentley that bad? what's wrong with it? i got in with 1/3rd. i guess not considering.. as much anymore.

Sigh, You have to take what Krazyk says with a grain of salt. Check out the students review web site ( just do a search for "students review"). They have lot of comments and ratings by Bentley kids and alums and give it one of the highest grades for colleges. Krazyk is just one person whose opinions seems to be a bit off from the majority of students there.

the students review website is interesting. i looked it up just now, and i have to say that most of what people say is true. here is one sample review (listed as a positive review) that should sum things up nicely:

"
Bentley College seems like the right place for the right person, but that college was not the right place for me as I transfered out. I am going to give you the Pros and Cons about Bentley.

Pros:
- Great coporate business school with a very good reputation in the Northeast
- Faculty is very helpful and approachable
- Tons of resources (library, stock trading room etc...)
- Class sizes are small
- Only about a 15 minute shuttle ride outside of Boston. Bentley runs a shuttle to a from Boston that leaves every hour on the weekdays and every half hour on the weekends

Cons:
- Outside of the Northeast no one has heard of Bentley, or very FEW people have.
- The ratio, 60/40 girls to guys. And even though its only 60/40 it feels a lot worse because the hot girls get even *****ier and the not so hot girls all the sudden think they are gods because they are in higher demand. Meanwhile the hot girls flock to our pathetic DII football team, and the rest have boyfriends.
- Sports teams. While the athletic teams seem to run most of the parties on campus, there is a total lack of school spirit as no one goes to any of the football games or any of the games for that matter. Even so, our football team walks around the campus always sporting something so you know they are on the team. In addition, they have it in their heads that they are gods and should be in the NFL. First time I went to a Bentley football game I thought it was a high school game. Our basketball team was undefeated last season and did not draw big crowds until they were in the sweet sixteen in the NCAA II basketball tournament.
- Social Life. BLOWS, especially if you are a guy. If you never partied in high school and you come here I guess you will think the social life is pretty great. But if you have, you will quickly notice that the only thing to do on campus is go to upperclassmen's apartments, which you will have a very hard time getting in unless you find 2 or 3 girls to bring with you. And, if you are not an athelete or a girl good luck getting into any of the athletic parties. If you somehow do manage to get in the keg is usually kicked by 11:30 and theres nothing to drink, which means all the girls leave. Then you are just left in a hot sweaty apartment with a bunch of dudes, COOL!
- Frat/Sor. While the frat scene is pretty weak, its not horrible, as some people say. It is something to do, and I suggest if you are looking for a party scene and you don't play sports consider joining a frat. The frats do not have houses on campus, they are off campus and run shuttles to and from the campus to get people to the houses when they throw parties. In the beginning of the semester this is actually something to do, but once rush week ends (first week or two of the semester) and the pledging starts which means the parties are only open to people who are either in the frat/sor or are pledging the frat or sor. I can remember countless nights sitting in my dorm room with 3 or 4 of the guys on my floor, drunk and no where to go.

My advice:
If you are looking for a small school that can get you a pretty good business education, but can sacrifice the "ra ra" spirit of going to a larger university, go to Bentley.

If you are looking for more of a "college" expierence, something closer to the lines of "animal house" find somewhere else to go. Bentley is not going to be able to give you that school spirit, tons of nightlife sort of feel. At best, you'll hopefully get to an apartment party before the keg is kicked.

taxguy isn't a student at bentley. i am, and although i have negative things to say about the school, i am saying them to inform prospective students out there before they make a decision. choosing a college is life-altering and should not be taken with a grain of salt. i've been here for a few years and can tell you that yes, bentley does have good academics and nice resources. not every college will hand out free copies of the wall street journal each morning.

but you shouldn't come to a college just because of that. please take a holistic approach. if you are a very picky eater and food is important for you, maybe consider other schools with a better dining service. almost daily i hear some girl in the dining hall saying, "omg, i hate seasons sooo much". if you really want a trading room and are a forex expert, maybe this is the school for you.

but to sum things up, bentley isn't made for everyone. i can personally attest to that, and maybe there are some sour grapes, but i cant blame the school for that. bentley is bentley and it will be good for few, not so good for others.

Although I think Krazyk tried to be "fair" by citing one review from students review web site, here are the evaluations from 34 kids, one of which might even be Krazyk:

Overall Grade: A-(8.2)

Out of 34 Surveys
Education Quality 8.7, A-
Social Life 7.7, B+
Extracurricular Activities 8.1, B+
...
University Resource Use 9.0, A
Surrounding City 8.6, A-

In addition , 81% of the kids noted that they would return to Bentley, which is MUCH higher than Babson and even NYU.

Here is another survey of Bentley by a student:

Great school. It'll provide you with a solid foundation/platform for the business world. Although a smaller/lesser known b school, it's an all-star with a comprehensive approach to business/liberal arts education.

Upon graduation/entering the workforce, I had developed business savvy and skills equivalent to folks twice my age. Bentley is an institutional "change agent": it embraces progress, technology, and diversity like no other school that I looked at. To boot, I think it has one of the best campuses in New England...

With the recent election of a new college President in Fall of '07, I have no doubt that it will start to gain its "due" footprint on the global map.

Bottom Line: I agree somewhat with Krazyk. Bentley has a lot to offer for the right student. If you want a strong business program with a great student-faculty ratio/interaction and great facilities near a great city, it is a great choices AS LONG AS you understand the cons of Bentley: small private school that isn't cheap.

As for the food, again, Karzyk doesn't have anything to compare it with. To say school food is bad doesn't reflect that this is true at amost every college we have seen! In fact, by comparison, Bentley food was surprisingly better than most!

taxguy isn't the best person to listen to. he may very well be a parent of a student who goes here, and that probably means he has eaten at the school a few times at most - not every single day like me, an actual student. for people who eat at bentley's dining halls once in a blue moon (during parents' weekend for example), yes, bentley appears to offer a decent dining experience. wait until you become a freshman who has to eat the food on a daily basis. the only foods with taste to them are very fatty and greasy, which are the pizzas and french fries. all others with any form of nutritional value are poorly served.

what's worse is that bentley has a very unfair contract with our catering company, sodexho, that forces all incoming freshmen to be on the most expensive meal plan, which is $4400. you have no other option. so if you're the type that is too busy and may eat only once a day, you're paying ~$30 just to eat that one time for one day. it boggles my mind how bentley has gotten away with this practice over the years, as many of my professors have even scoffed at this.

i understand taxguy may be a proud parent of a son/daughter who comes to bentley. he has written a "rebuttal" to every post i have made on these forums, fervently vouching for bentley and telling prospective students to take my words with "a grain of salt". he is a parent. i am a student. i experience life here on a daily basis, as i write these very words sitting in my dorm room. i have said both good things and bad things about the school, but that is only to inform those looking to be informed. knowledge is power and every student has a right to know.

Krazyk, I am NOT discounting your opinion, nor am I saying that your views are wrong , and I am right. In fact, we are probably both right. I am only mentioning that you are just one person with your own views, which you are certainly entitled to.There certainly are a number of other students whose views differ from yours. In fact, based on reviews gleaned from other web sites, your views are in the minority. If folks don't believe me over that of Krazyk, I encourage you to do your own research.Check out what other people are saying about Bentley in other forums. That is the message that I want people to know.

As for food, I will say this again, food at most colleges that we have seen is usually bad. It certainly gets boring after a period of time at every school. However, compared to other schools, Bentley actually has better food. Better doens't mean great; it just means better.

The key to all colleges is fitness for the student. I think what Krazyk said in post number 8 is somewhat a fair representation. However, what he considerd bad points such as small school, no "animal house" type of spirit, etc. might be just right for some students. Personally, my son loves the small classes and great student-faculty interaction. He had an "animal house' experience as an undergraduate and feels that both he and others at Bentley are geting a better education than those at his prior state university.

As for social life, again, you have to take his opinion as just that: an opinion from his perspective. My son has no such social life problems. If you are a dork and stay in your room participating in LAN parties, you probably won't meet a lot of folks. If, however, you are outgoing, join clubs, attend many meeting, involve yourself with other schools too, you probably will have no social problems.Yes, it may be a bit harder to have a great social life at a small school, but it certainly isn't impossible.

I am not saying that Krazyk is wrong. It is probably right for him. That is the main concept, "right for him." It may not be right, however, for other people.

To use an analogy, people can look at a glass that his either half empty or consider it half full. It depends on each person's perspective. I think Bentley has a lot of benefits and certainly has its drawbacks as Krazyk pointed out. I am trying to give an alternative view of the school from both my son's and my perspective.

it's funny taxguy would say, "If you are a dork and stay in your room participating in LAN parties, you probably won't meet a lot of folks." i think just about everybody in my hall has an xbox360 and plays LAN games every weekend. it is one of the better ways to meet people as they are open-door most of the time.

it's unfortunate though, because a lot of people here are close-minded, so you have to take initiative to say hi and strike up a conversation if you want to meet people. bentley is a very cliquish community so make a group of friends early on so you dont become a loner. personally i realized how important the social experiences you have in college are. if you're looking for diversity and lots of people, bentley isn't the best place for you.
