Hook: My dad went to UMich for undergrad, and my mom for grad school.

I would say slight-moderate reach, mostly due to your gpa and your OOS status, though your alumni connection is pretty strong. Also, being URM may help. Write great essays and I'm sure you'll have a solid chance

URM no longer helps. Living in a poor area does, though. Between your ACT score, legacy, and strong course-load, I'd say you are a match despite being OOS.

Also, check what your GPA is when freshman year grades are removed. UMich doesn't count them in your GPA.

My town isn't all a "poor area"--it's very socioeconomically diverse and is home to some of the poorest and some of the wealthiest people you will ever meet. How would knowing where I come from let them know whether I'm from a poor neighborhood or not?

They will only know through your essay. But be careful, regional counselors read it, and they know your area. So don't try and pull anything that's not true lol (not that you would anyway, jst a warning). good luck!

No, they use a program called descriptor plus that labels schools according to the average socioeconomic status and racial diversity of the student body. It has nothing to do with the essay.
