your class rank is good; however, your SAT’s are well below BC’s median. If you could get your reading and writing in the 670 range, then your class rank would definately make up for the rest, other than that you are a competitive applicant for BC. Good luck!

Dear Nichhole : Question for you - before posting your information, have you really done research on the academic requirements needed for BC? I say this in sincerity and will take the time to comment on your chance-me discussion, but this will be a very tough review.

Your critical reading score is 40 points below the 25th percentile of the accepted class from three years back. Using a sliding scale, a 570 on the critical reading is about the 5th percentile in the incoming class. On the positive flip side, your SAT Math places you at the midpoint of an entering class. Your ACT composite at 26 is again in the bottom quartile of the acceptance pool from three years back. You are about the 15th percentile here at best.

Being a top 5% student in your graduating class typically means that solid writing skills are present. A 590 writing score does not reflect the rigor that one typically finds in a student among the top 20 students in their graduating class. You are based in Massachusetts which is over-represented (20%) in the entering class this year and that location diversity is not in your favor.

Based on your presentation here, BC will be a huge stretch school for you and the suggestion would be to find some schools more commensurate with your current board scores.

Again, apologies for the tough review - but your numbers just do not add up right now.

I’m confused…how is it that you are applying for college class of 2013, as stated in your stats? Are you entering your senior year? Wouldn’t you be the class of 2014?

I was confused too by that - Retake the SAT’s, I took them twice, got 490 the first time on the writing and 630 the second time, basically same topic, I wrote the same, no real change in my writing in a couple months.

You can look into get some private tutoring over the summer in specific sections of the SAT. It usually starts with your taking a sample SAT test to identify which type of questions you have difficulty with and learn strategies on how to approach them. My D worked with Huntington last summer and was able to increase her CR score once she realized where and how she was getting hung up. We like to think the money was well spent since she was accepted to BC’s Class of 2013.
