Chances?

Pardon the interruption from someone who lives on the parent’s side of town. D has got was she says is her final list. What are her chances at Bowdoin?

Rec’s should be very good to exceptional, essays will be good.

Thanks, 8 more to go.LOL.

She looks like she'd have great chances everywhere. Definitely send the SAT/ACT scores. It's so hard to understand why some schools reject some people, so there really isn't any way of knowing whether or not she'll get in, but she's certainly a strong candidate there. Plus, being from Texas, there's a good chance that she would contribute to the geographic diversity, which is probably important since a lot of the kids that go to Bowdoin are from the Northeast. And if it makes any difference, I got in this year without visiting or interviewing--I wouldn't recommend showing so little interest, but it didn't seem to matter that much.

Geniusnki, she is planning on playing the small town, actually no town LOL,Texas up for just that reason. I sure hope she can visit. I've seen the campus. It is wonderful.

Were your stats comparable? Were you ED or RD?

Hey Curmudgeon - crossing paths at a few of these places! I'd say Mudgarella has excellent chances at being accepted at Bowdoin.

Curm;
What, no organ donations? (LOL)
Your D is an exceptional applicant.
From what I've learned in coaching my D through this process is that it's the "total package" Admissions will be looking for.
Now, she needs to prepare a tremendous essay or 2 that will endear her to the Admissions committee.
Good luck!

rskibum, thanks. That's very kind. I'll pass it along to D.

Bowdoin is a tremendous place - I can't say enough good things about it. Great little college town, drop-dead ocean nearby (there are few places in the east as beautiful as their sailing cove), exceptionally personal and fast help from everyone in administration, teachers who invite you to their homes and get recs for grants etc. out FAST.

And for what it's worth (for those who care - I don't), USNWR just moved it up to number 6. However, Bowdoin doesn't need to care - it is one of the oldest and finest institutions in the US.

OK, so here's the bottom line: EVERYONE who applies is fantastic. The essay DOES matter a lot. Bowdoin wants people who really want to be there, not people using it as a safety, and that can show up in the essay. Also, it's a good idea to meet (even online) profs in your field of interest. One prof even agreed to me a kid during his (the prof's ) vacation! If you know something about a particular department, program, etc., it helps.

Good luck to your daughter! I would say she has a 99.9% chance of getting in - the geography will help tremendously!!!! I would be amazed if she DIDN'T get in.
