chances?

What are my chances at Rice University? I have a 3.6 UW and a 4.3 W. I have a 35 ACT and a 2310 SAT. I got 800 on both SAT II Math Subject Tests. I got a 780 on the SAT II Physics Subject Test. I am ranked in the top 10 percent of my class. I play tennis and violin competitively. Honors include 2010 Yale Science and Engineering Award, 2009 All-State Orchestra, 6th Place Algebra 2 2008 Louisiana Mu Alpha Theta Convention, 12th place Log 1 Math Contest, 3rd Place Greater Baton Rouge Tennis Championships, 7th Place 2008 Riverside High School Mu Alpha Theta Tournament, Louisiana Youth Orchestra, 2nd Place 2007 St. Paul's Mu Alpha Theta Tournament, and others. I am also in clubs such as Interact Rotary Club, Mu Alpha Theta, National Honors Society, Beta Club, Science Club, Indian Student Association, and others. I have over 100 hours of community service. I got a 5 on both the Calc. AB and BC exams, and I have taken college credit classes in U.S. History, American Literature, and Physics. My GPA could be higher, but I have gone through a lot of adversity. I broke my arm in the second semester of 9th grade, had bronchitis in the 1st semester of 10th grade, had mono during final exams of the second semester of 10th grade, and had 2 family friends die in the first semester of 11th grade. I have shown improvement since 2010 though. I ran for Interact, Mu Alpha Theta, and National Honors Society President, lost, but got the second highest number of votes in each election, so people look at me as one who would make a strong leader. Could you please tell me my chances?

So you’ve improved in the 4 months of 2010? What is your class rank? 86% of Rice students are in the top 10% of their class.

Average to Decent chances, EC is weak. You have a Yale alumni association award from your school, all-state orchestra, and a bunch of Mu Alpha Theta filler. Don’t worry too much about your GPA as your strong standardized testing scores should boost your application.

Try to show interest in Rice. Request an interview, visit campus, sign up for their email list, etc. That’ll help your chances, in my opinion. If you look at the Rice thread, a lot of really good applicants were waitlisted/denied over those who showed interest. Granted, Rice still accepted a ton of great students, but they were great students who had showed interest and made sure that they were in fact a good fit for the school.
