Chances?

So I'm a senior, and NYU is like my dream school, and I've put in all of my info on all of the college chances calculators online, and they all say I've got a pretty good shot of getting in, but I wanted to see if some current NYU students agreed?

As far as which test scores I'm submitting, the NYU website said one of the possible combinations is SAT Reasoning test scores along with 2 AP tests, so I'm thinking I'll submit my SATs and my US History & English Language AP scores.

By the way - applying for CAS, wanting to double major in journalism and international relations.

hayleyelisa,

I don’t normally get involved with these chance threads, but you appear to be a very strong candidate to me, based on your excellent SAT scores, rigor of classes (good number of AP classes, esp. including senior year), strong community service. The only thing I’m not certain about is your leadership roles in ECs, are all your council memberships considered as leadership positions? If that is the case, you appear to be a really strong candidate for CAS. (And you are Hispanic!)

The reason I am responding to this is I think you should look into the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Program, which awards Scholars $25,000 a year for 4 years (if a minimum GPA of 3.5 is maintained). Financial need is considered separately from the award $. Especially if you are in leadership positions with the community service, and you write a strong essay and get really top recommendations, you could be a candidate for the scholarship. IMHO.

By the way, the MLK Scholarship program is not something you apply for. They will hand pick you if you are a good fit, but I would look into what kind of program it is through the NYU website and see if it matches you. If it does, focus your essay on aspects of yourself that match the mission and purpose of the program. My son did not know about the program before being selected. He just happened to get together an application that was a perfect fit for the program, based on who he is as a student and as a person.

Thanks for the quick response! As far as leadership, I’ve been editor-in-chief of my school yearbook for two years, I’ll be an editor of the newspaper as well, and all of the church councils I’ve been elected to, so I think they’re considered leadership positions. My English teacher and my journalism teacher both told me they’d write me really good recs, and my journalism teacher is an NYU alum, so hopefully that will carry some weight.

As far as the MLK scholarship is concerned, I saw it on the NYU website and thought I could be a fit, but kind of dismissed it because I just thought that there would be so many better applicants than me. But the fact that you think I would be a good fit is really reassuring! As far as the essay is concerned, I’ve already written it, and it doesn’t focus as much on that aspect of my life as it probably could. Would you mind telling me what your son’s essay was about so I could see how I could change mine to better fit the scholarship?

bump - opinions of any current NYU students?
