Chances

Hi all,

I have been haunting this forum for the past few weeks and I have noticed that the advice given here is good, realistic and honest so I am going to give it a go. I am trying to figure out where I stand as an applicant to the colleges I am applying to. Any help that you can offer me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Colleges I am applying to…
University of Chicago
Northwestern University
Tufts
Boston University
Emory

My stats…

GPA-Unweighted 3.5
-Weighted 4.9

SAT 1320 (V 710 M 610 W 620ish)

ACT 26

Class rank- I have not received it yet

Curriculum- Very intense, very sleep depriving and chock full of AP and IB courses

School Activities
NHS 10-12
Vice President of a drug-free club
Participant of a summer program sponsored by the local university’s honor college
Badminton

Extracurriculars
Volunteer work at a local hospital for the past five summers. I worked in a variety of departments such as Rehab, ICU, Maternity, Nuclear Imaging, Gift Shop, Pharmacy, etc. Really learned about the patient-doctor relationship as well as a lot of health stuff.

Over a year at a local non-profit organization that helps resettles refugees. Organized projects such as a toy drive, school supplies drive and currently organizing an awareness campaign and fundraiser for genocide victims. Worked as a special events volunteer such as a photographer during the annual Christmas celebration and a receptionist during a tax program event. Learned how to write grant proposals, project proposals, donation requests, and sponsorship proposals as well as basic graphic design skills, volunteer recruitment skills, etc.

Accolades
Freshmen achievement award for academics and community involvement (one per grade level)
Various community service awards from places of service

Additional questions...

Is race/ethnicity a factor in the schools mentioned above?

Is the geographical region I am from a factor?

Does being an IB student help me when being considered by the admissions committees?

Thanks for reading this far and thanks doubly if you reply.

Hmm, I think you have a shot, but I'd be curious what people think as your stats are very similar to mine. BTW: don't submit that ACT, it's MUCH lower than your SAT's.

"GPA-Unweighted 3.5
-Weighted 4.9"
I'm wondering how it's mathematically possible to gain more than one point on your wgpa from your regular gpa.

asparagus101, since I am also IB, I am curious to know how being IB helps you get into a college.

Duffman, thanks for you input. Just wondering, do you mean I have a shot at all the universities I am aiming for?

Pugachev, all my courses are AP or IB so I guess maybe that's why there is a difference between the two GPAs. My GPA is actually pretty average for the kids at my school. I know someone who has a 3.6 unweigted GPA, but has a 5.0+ weighted.

Anymore evaluations?

While your GPA is strong, your test scores may hurt you in your chances at Tufts, Emory, UofC, and Northwestern as they all give the SAT great weight in determining decision outcomes. I'd recommend applying to more safety schools that you would like going to as your list as of now is very reach heavy. It is entirely possible that BU might not accept you.

However, if you are an underrepresented minority, this may change.

Thanks snuffles. Your response was a real eye-opener, but it's better to know where I stand, then not knowing.
