Can I ONLY put my mom’s tax info in fafsa. I need to fill out my fafsa as soon as my mom gets her taxes paper which is mid. jan. & my dad doesn’t get his till mid. feb.(got a new job) I don’t like to waiting that long. Can this also give me a little more financial help? Can I do that ? even though I put both of my parents tax info last year. also my parents are NOT married but live together in a house. I also have a step brother who lives with me. We both started college in fall 2014. He only puts my dad’s tax info. Can I do that to but instead of my dad, I use my moms.?
btw we all live together.
You must provide the info of both of your biological parents. It’s a recent requirement for unmarried biological parents who live together to both be listed. Your step-brother only needs to provide his biological dad’s info since his dad and your mom aren’t married.
Your situation is a bit confusing. Do you and your ‘step-brother’ have the same bio dad? Are the two parents in your house your bio mom and bio dad and they are not married to each other?
- Even if they are unmarried,if both of your parents are living together, both of their information must be included on the FAFSA.
- If you and your "stepbrother" have the same father, you are not step siblings, you are half siblings. Your sibling would only include the income of his custodial parent (your father) and any monies paid on his behalf by your mother.
Yes we have the same bio dad. & i live both with my bio mom & dad, they’re just not married.
& What happens if I don’t put one of parent’s info on FAFSA?
If you don’t include your dad you will be committing fraud. If found out there are possible penalties and aid could be taken away. Do you understand the difference as to why your half-brother isn’t required to include your mom?
Yes.Okay. I’m not risking it. I was just wondering. Thank you!
Did you include your half-brother as a member of the household who is also attending college?
Your dad’s income amount is what he earned last year. Is there any way your parents can give you an estimate of what that number is so you can do the FAFSA now? You can update it after they file their taxes.
Yes I did include my brother. &
Tbh I’m not really sure but I’ll talk to them. My dad doesn’t work at the same job as last year though…would that matter? I’m sorrry if I’m asking dumb questions. This fafsa thing is so confusing since my parents aren’t married and I live with my half brother & sister & my dad keeps getting new jobs literally mostly every other season. He’s an architect & construction worker.
You can file FAFSA now, and estimate your father’s income. If you don’t know, use last year’s numbers or ask your father to give you an estimate based on his billing this year or end of the year paystubs.
Okay Thank you!
