I received an offer of admission today from UC Davis and I noticed that at the bottom of the email, it says “College of Letters and Science: Economics”.
Is it possible to change my major to mathematics and elect a minor in Economics? Or double major in Mathematics and Economics? When should I inform them of this change?
Switching majors within the same College is pretty easy. You cannot change majors until after Freshman Orientation, so when you attend I would let your academic advisor know of your plan.
Just wanted to point that out in case the follow up question was how to declare a minor.
A double major essentially requires a few signatures once you’ve completed a certain amount of coursework in each major. When I declared mine, the rules were 1) completing all prep classes for each major and 2) completing at least two upper division classes in each major. This was a few years ago though, so if you do go this route you’ll want to talk to an adviser to find out the current policy. Regardless, you wouldn’t be officially declaring the double major until at least sophomore year, most likely junior year or the summer before it.
Essentially, as it is now you just let your advisor(s) know of your plan and they’ll help you build your schedule accordingly. In this case, take MAT 21ABC as normal (covers calculus requirements for both majors), plus one or both of ECN 1A and 1B and you should be just fine for either the major + minor or double major. Of course, double check with an adviser to make sure.
