Change me dawg

Asian, In-state, Male

GPA- 3.27 UW
SAT- 1720 (but retaking in October and have been getting roughly 1900 on practice tests, so pretend I already have a 1900 when chancing me)

Classes:
9th grade: 1 honors class + French II
10th grade: 3 honors classes + French III
11th grade: 3 AP classes- AP USH, AP Lang/Comp, AP Environmental Sci + French IV
12th grade: 3 AP classes- AP US Gov, AP Psychology, AP Lit/Comp
Total: 6 AP classes, 4 honors classes (10 total)

Side note: I know that my GPA is on the lower end.. However, I got a 3.67 GPA in the second semester of my Junior year. So UW will see that I got my act together.

Extra Curricular:
-4 years in a committee (officer grades 11/12)
-3 years volunteering for the local Food Bank (non-profit)
-2 years French Club (Vice-president grade 12)
----About 200 hours of community service.

Essays: There's a high chance that I will talk about my family's journey to America. Needless to say, I am going to try to make the essays 10/10 quality-wise.

Thanks for reading. Please chance me. I'll chance you back if you provide a link.

Your essay will either make it or break it.
Make sure it is uniquely riginal and attention grabbing.

Question.

I do realize my GPA is on the lower end, but doesn’t my class rigor make up for it at least a little bit?

GPA is low, your “class rigor” isn’t actually all that rigorous cause it’s filled with humanities and not hard science classes, and your essay sounds incredibly boring.

You won’t even have a chance unless your essay is a million times more interesting, sorry.

Agree with the above posts. Your essays will make or break. If you had taken AP’s like Chem, Physics, Calc BC then perhaps it would be a different story. Your EC’s are also just so so. Is that all you’ve done? You get to write about 5 different ECs/Honors/Awards.

When you talk about your family’s journey, are you talking about your family, or you? Are you showing the admissions officers what you learned from the experience? To be honest, I think your essay should be more focused on YOU. If you start talking about your family journey to America, you may stray off tangent if you’re not careful. Be CREATIVE. Be UNIQUE.

Also, have you thought about taking the ACT?

Despite what the others said, I think the rigor in your schedule is fine; my friends have gotten in with way easier classes. If you do get 1900 SAT, that’s pretty decent but man is your GPA LOW.

I’d advise you to make your essay tear-jerking. My family also immigrated to America and in my essay I talked about the hardships of being in an environment where I don’t understand what people are saying as well as how the rift between me and everyone else still affects me. I think as long as your essay’s in the top 30 percent of the essays read by the readers, you’ll get in (I got in with mentioning less extra curricular activities so I think you’re fine in that department as well).

Azwolg- That was pretty harsh. I think I see what you’re trying to say though…
Speedsolver-I see your point on what I should write about.
LousyDonut- I’ll take that into consideration.

I would have to agree with posts above about the essay topic.
Many immigrants or 2nd generation Americans write about “journey to America.”
Therefore, it will be very hard to stand out. Focus on you. Write about you something /event that reveals yourself beyond academics and applications can show.

I do see many humanities courses. Maybe this could be your hook. There would be a reason that you took many humanities courses.

I believe that you will do fine as long as you continue to raise your GPA, get 1900 SAT, and write a fantastic essay. Remember to edit your essays multiple times. Do not leave any sections blank in the application such as ‘additional comment.’ I wrote a brief essay for ‘additional comment.’

Good luck and see you at UW!

Although your major will not effect your admission, what are you planning to major?

shark- I definitely see your point. That ******* Azwolg thought that I was taking humanities courses because they were easy. **** him. I took/am taking them because I have a genuine interest for humanities. Thanks for the positivity, I was feeling down after reading some of those responses - although they were brutally honest haha.

pumpkins- I’m not 100% sure, but I am looking towards psychology. I have the world’s most boring AP psych teacher, but somehow am still very interested in what we learn.

And as for my essay topic. I am going to change it because you guys are right about it having to be about me.

No, I didn’t think you took the humanities courses because they were easy. I said that your class load isn’t rigorous enough to justify your subpar GPA. If you didn’t want the honest truth, you shouldn’t have made this topic. Don’t get mad at me for telling you what you don’t want to hear.

My bad. I accepted your constructive criticism, but I just thought that it was a little harsh.

ilikeUW…
Don’t people post " chance me " threads with the expecation of hearing the bare truth? Just take it as a helpful comment and work even harder on your ESSAY!

Honestly, it’s really hard to say what your chances are. UW is sometimes unpredictable, i know students with 4.0 gpas, 2300 SATs get flat out rejected and kids with 3.5 ish gpas and 1800 SAT scores get accepted. And based on my observation, i think UW looks more than just grades and test scores.

I’m going to tell you a story. About three years ago there was a guy at my school who was gay and had a miserable time in high school. His grades were horrid his freshmen and sophomore year, i believe they were 2.0s or worse. But anyways, he had a passion to speak to other gay teens around the school and to support the LGBT community so he started a club at our school called the GSA. He dedicated so much of his time to this club because it was something that meant a lot to him, to stand up for gays. He pulled up his gpa with rigorous course load and maintained a 3.7+ for his junior and senior year, got around 27-28 ACT and applied. He got in. He wrote his essay on his passion, the hardships and the bullying he went through and how it changed him to stand up for what he believed in. UW saw what a motivated student he was and accepted him. I believe his overall uw gpa was around low 3s but with an impressive grade trend and decent test scores. So really, all you need to do is just show who you are in your essays. Tell them who you are and what your thing is.

Anyways, I think you have a chance but don’t rely on it. Just put your 110% this year and on your essays and you can have a good chance. I’m applying to UW too with a little higher gpa but with a little less ap courses. Just don’t lose hope because i am not going to and if you don’t get in, then you just don’t. It was worth the shot at it.

Here is a useful site for chancing:

http://college./analytics/scatter-plots.php?id=1585

The red dots on the scatter diagram are rejections. There should be many more red dots but rejected students more often do not report their rejection on the site. However, it gives a sense of the range of rejections, even on the high GPA and SAT scales.

For some reason the link was blocked. Maybe this will work: [University of Washington Scatter Plots | My Chances.net - College admissions predictions.](http://■■■■■■■/uw2)

Very interesting alternative to CC haha. Nice site.

Being instate will help a lot. It’s true that your GPA is a little low but universities do look for an upward trend in GPA throughout high school. A 1900 SAT is enough as UW cares more about GPA. You have some nice mixture of AP classes but it’s true that colleges look at AP Calculus as the “big kahuna” of high school classes and then comes the sciences Physics, Chemistry, etc. Having decent EC’s is good and I see that you have experience as a leader which will help. And yes I agree that you need to really nail the essay. Can’t stress this enough. Colleges want to see who YOU are. Try to be specific in your essay while not disrupting the flow of your piece. Show your voice. Be open and personal and not vague and full of cliches. Find some trustworthy people on CC and ask them to check your essay for you. And remember when they give you negative feedback don’t take it personally they only want to help you come up with the best product possible. In addition, at my high school we had college admission reps all over Washington State that came to our school to read our essays while us students watched, which really helped. Last year I got mine read from Western, UW-Bothell and Washington State… maybe you should ask your school if they could arrange something like that.

how did u guess my name?
