Hi CC,

I'm currently enrolled at Oxford College at Emory, and I have a question about a potential academic record change I may be facing. During my senior year, I took an AP Economics course (which combined both Macro and Micro Economics), which I listed in my Fall transcript; however, I opted not to take the AP Micro or Macro Economics exams, seeing as how a) I've chosen other AP's to take the credit for to fit Oxford's limit on AP credits, and b) I have plans to re-take Economics in college, as I did not feel fully prepared by my AP Economics course.

I recently found out that my high school is not in favor of students taking AP courses but not taking the test. Therefore, they've said that they may decide to not give me the credit for AP Econ, meaning that it would show as simply regular "Economics" on my transcript. I'm curious as to how this change would be viewed by my college. I hope that I can convince my high school not to make that change, but if they do, would my admission to Oxford be at risk?

Thanks for any help guys!

You should contact your admissions representative to inform Oxford of the change. [Oxford College - Admission Representatives](http://www.oxford.emory.edu/admission/rollovermap/)

Also, I’d be screaming at whoever decided on that boneheaded move. Point out that you did all of the work required for the AP econ class. Changing your transcript because you didn’t take a test is flat out lying.

If you took the AP Econ class and passed, then that should be what it reads on your transcript. Results for the AP tests don’t come in until July and your class grade should be set by that time. You should have your parents call and make a fuss about it.

I don’t think Oxford will care (because you’ll have crap tons of APs without it), but just on principle, I would get it changed. Their “discouragement” can’t lead to encouraging the revision of your academic history. That makes no sense. And your school is kind of messed up if they believe that the only benefit of taking an AP class is to take the exam. If they pay for the exams, all they should have done was not order one for you (I wonder how long in advanced they would order the exams for everyone if this were the case). Lastly, unless they could prove that the class is no different from honors or traditional level econ at your HS in terms of workload and content, they shouldn’t even think of doing this.

Unfortunately, it is surprisingly common for crazy school districts to try to force you to take the AP test to get AP credit. I don’t think it’ll be a big issue for Oxford, but you might contact them anyway. You might also review your right under FERPA to challenge your educational record as inaccurate or misleading.

I think it may be as well. I know my school was because the exam was payed for by the district, so they would have all sorts of forced incentives such as adding a final examination score and giving you a 0 if you didn’t take it (but having no benefit other than not receiving the 0 if you did).
