I tried to post this on the Ask the Dean forum but was blocked. I placed a deposit on what I thought was my son's first choice, but it looks like he is changing his mind. He has not notified any of his other schools yet that he will not be attending. If he simultaneously withdraws from his first choice and places a deposit with his new choice, will there be repercussions? No one is trying to game the system. These are regular decision schools.

Provided that this was not an Early Decision school it is all OK. When he finally decides that this one is off the list, a simple note thanking them for their time and telling them that his plans have changed is all that is needed. He may or may not lose the deposit. That depends on the college/university itself.

If the is his ED school things get messier, and some other places on his list might reject his applications because they respect other college/university ED agreements.
