I also posted this on the Admissions forum. I placed a deposit on what I thought was my son's first choice, but it looks like he is changing his mind. He has not notified any of his other schools yet that he will not be attending. If he simultaneously withdraws from his first choice and places a deposit with his new choice, will there be repercussions? No one is trying to game the system. These are regular decision schools. This whole process is new to us and we want to do the right thing.

I think it’s fine as long as you notify the school… Maybe call them to ask once the holidays are over, just in case?

Honestly I would wait until he is absolutely sure he does not want to attend the school that you put the deposit on. Most likely you can’t get it back anyway and it’s a long way until offical decision time.

Thanks for the replies. I probably will wait until he is absolutely sure before I pay the new deposit and have him withdraw the previous acceptance. I’m not worried about the actual loss of deposit money. I just don’t want either school to think he was double depositing on purpose and both offers are rescinded. He would literally place a deposit and withdraw from the first school at the same time, before 5/1. Gosh, it sure was easier when I applied to college back in the day!

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if a lot of kids deposit at one college and then change their minds later. Sometimes kids don’t even know if they are going to get into college until feb or later but meanwhile they have got into another college and they want to make sure they have a dorm room if they don’t get into the other college. Also I don’t think colleges check with each other on who has paid a deposit or not.( at least I don’t think they do.)

Good luck on deciding which one to go to.

Most deposits are refundable until a certain point. Check the fine print at the college you are deposited. Technically kids should only be deposited at one school so keep the deposit until your son is sure.

If it isn’t Early Decision there is usually no problem with having multiple deposits down (if you don’t mind losing $$). A lot of people do that because they want to make sure their kid gets a good dorm room at colleges where late depositers may get the worst dorm rooms or no room at all. Mine got into her second choice in December so I put a deposit down, and her first choice in March, so we put down another deposit (and lost the other) You just should make a final decision by May 1 or whatever the final deadline is.
