Changed my mind about major after applying! Am I in trouble?

Hello everyone!

So I just got my acceptance email from City College of New York into their Department of Liberal Arts.
However, right around last month, I realized that I wanted to major in Computer Science in their College of Engineering division!! Am I allowed to change this before I start classes?

Any help will be much appreciated!!! Thank you!

Call them and ask. Probably you should start with the admissions folks. At a minimum they should know who you will need to call next. Be polite and calm (always a good idea when trying to get people to agree to something).

I know of multiple cases of students changing majors, including one who changed majors between applying and signing up for initial classes. I think that in some cases the school appeared to look at grades in relevant classes before saying “okay”. Another option might be to major in liberal arts the first semester, but take a few computer classes and then transfer based on doing well in the computer classes.

I think that universities vary in terms of what they will allow at this point.

Thank you! Are you actually allowed to take classes like “Computer Science 101” even if you’re in a totally different division?

@seyoseyo you can probably take CS courses at some point. However many schools restrict these courses some semesters to those whose major requires the class (like those with declared CS major). Depends largely on number of seats available in the class vs number who need to take it and prof availability. Also, if CS is a capped major at your school, your chances of simply changing before you attend are less likely.
