This doesn't affect me since I'm graduating in May, but I figured this would be good knowledge for parents & incoming students who wouldn't have gotten this email today.

In short, students will no longer be required to buy health insurance through the school if they can show that they are covered by a parents/spouses/whoevers plan already. In other words, it'll save you several hundred dollars a year for an entirely unnecessary plan.

Student Health/ student health insurance has always been my number 1 (and practically only) complaint, so I'm quite happy to see that the school has decided to change the policy.

Email:

Dear Washington University Danforth Campus students,
I am writing to announce the transition to a new system of ensuring that all Washington University students have acceptable health insurance as a condition of enrollment. The new policy will take effect with the 2013-14 academic year.

As in the past, all students still will be required to have acceptable health insurance, and the university will continue to offer a student health insurance plan. However, students may now waive purchasing the university plan if they can prove they have adequate coverage through another plan. Many students are eligible for coverage on their parents insurance policy until age 26, while others may be eligible for coverage on a spouses or partners plan. All acceptable plans must be Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliant and include prescription drug coverage.

Student Health Services will accept and bill multiple insurance carriers for services provided at our on-campus clinic, and the universitys present outpatient mental health system will be maintained, which includes nine counseling visits per academic year at no additional charge. There will still be a health fee, necessary to cover the additional costs of billing insurance companies as well as for health and wellness activities and programs available to all students.

More information on these changes, including fee structures for the university plan and instructions on providing proof of coverage, will be communicated this coming spring.
