changing from SPOP 3 to SPOP 9

will going to SPOP 9 be detrimental for me in registuring for classes? I need Math 2A, Chem 2A, Physics 2 and BME 1. I know the math, chem and physics classes won't be a problem in getting into since they are huge classes, but im worried for BME 1 because its only offered in the fall. At first I was considering going to SPOP 3 so i can personally pick teachers but now im ambivalent about it because i need to get used to adapting to situations not in my favor (terrible teachers), after all you can never expect to have things go your way all the time.

Are you already registered for SPOP 3? If so, YES, it would be nuts to switch to SPOP 9!

My daughter was in SPOP 1 and had a blast, but even THERE she didn’t get exactly what she wanted in terms of classes and schedule. Stuff FILLS UP. GO to the earliest SPOP you can get, you will NOT regret it.

And dude, yes, it’s great to adapt to various teachers and all that, but you will get PLENTY of experience with that later on. Don’t make your first quarter even harder than it should be, plus end up with a crappy schedule.

dam i already switched. It must be done though because of other crap I didn’t envisioned happening this week. I’ll just pray that i get those 4 classes i need. Perhaps the counselors were saving up spots for the rest of the SPOP days just so students couldn’t fully justify the unfairness of it. Anyone that came to a late SPOP and still got the classes they want --feel free to console me lol. No matter what though, we all need to accept the fact that things will never go according to plan…so i guess this teaches me to plan stuff out with regards to that great possibility.

But wait, just to make sure…they only schedule for the first quarter right? if its for the whole year…im screwed lol.

look on the brightside, i’m waitlisted for earlier spops lol. Btw thanks EdSupporter for the advice. I’ll make sure i won’t make that mistake my 2nd qtr.

Yep they only schedule for the first quarter. It really depends on your major too though. My major was really small so everyone registered at once and I got all the classes that I wanted. If you’re in a large major such as Biological Sciences, then it becomes a lot harder because there isn’t enough computers for everyone to register at once which means that there’s a line and they rush you. You can check online to see which classes are full and tweak the schedule that you want before SPOP. The time that I wanted for Writing 39B is already full, so the classes do fill up FAST.

Right, it is only for first quarter, but for my daughter’s major (ICS) everything sort of builds from the start, so it’s important to get certain classes as early as possible.

Cacophonous, same thing happened to my daughter with 39B. She was able to fit it in but not at the time she wanted. She hopes they release the themes for the different time slots at some point, as she may want to switch if there is a better theme. Of course, that’s assuming anything is open that she could switch to.

Wacked, it will work out okay, have a plan in mind when you go in based on what is open and be flexible and open to changes…so have some second choice options too. Your adviser will help you.

Will it be detrimental to push writing 39B back a quarter? or even a year?

@EdSupporter

I wasn’t aware that there were themes at all for Writing 30b. How do you check the theme? Mine filled up so hopefully it’s a good one.

@frenchfries 11
With Writing 30b and Math, they reserve spots especially for incoming freshman. After the first quarter, it may be hard to get those classes again because you’ll be competing with everyone else who hasn’t fulfilled that requirement either.

I remember reading some old posts and I believe they post it later on…check the syllabus.

Yup the themes for the fall quarter aren’t out yet, and neither are the specific professors. It seems like luck of the draw then. Hope I get something decent. I didn’t really like a lot of the themes for the Spring quarter.

@frenchfries11, it’s up to you on the Writing 39B, I just know for my daughter it’s good to get that foundation early, for other courses that are going to be writing-intensive. I don’t think it’s a big deal to push it out later in the year, but IMHO I would do it as a freshman, at least.

I have a feeling the themes for fall won’t be out until it’s too late to do any changes. Like you, cacophonous, my daughter wasn’t thrilled about some of the options on the spring list. Guess it will be a lesson in making it work, whatever she ends up with.
