Changing Major After Failing Other Classes

Hello, I’m currently an undergraduate. I recently failed my classes in fall semester, but during that semester I just didn’t find interest in the major I was originally signed up for. My old major was Biomedical, but now I want to major in Business Administration, it’s Actually my true calling. Do I have to retake the classes I’ve failed to switch to the major I want ?

You need to make an appointment with your academic advisor ASAP. Nobody here knows your college’s policy on retakes, nobody here knows the impact of failing classes on your enrollment.

And do NOT start another major without finding out the exact course sequence you need to take in order to graduate. And follow it to the T- unless you want to be on the 6 year plan… or have unlimited money to spend…

Thanks for the reply, but all I asked was would I have to take the classes I failed. Obviously you don’t know the policies nor how my college operates. Yes, I’ve already taken my required classes towards my AA, and I had already made an appointment with my advisor. I did not ask for a slick remark with your answer, if you’re not willing to genuinely help, don’t comment making it seem like you’re helping by belittling me in the process. Have a good day.

I wasn’t being slick and apologize if you took it that way. Honestly- how would any of us know what your college’s policies on F’s are? Every institution gets to decide how to handle grading, retakes, etc. Some colleges will “expunge”- if you get a B when you retake the course, the F goes away as if it never existed. Others will list that you took the course twice.

Same with switching majors. At some colleges it’s just a piece of paper to file. At others, it’s more of a process.

Happy you’ve made an appointment with your advisor who is going to know a lot more about YOUR college’s procedures than a bunch of strangers on the internet who have no idea what college you attend.

I failed a course in college. I did not retake it-- I took the next class in the sequence (a harder, more advanced version) and got a B, so the professor AND the Dean AND the registrar agreed that the first “f” could just disappear off my transcript. I don’t know if every college would allow that. I had one semester where I took an extra class to make sure I’d have enough credits to graduate on time.

This is the kind of stuff that you won’t know until your advisor reviews your situation with you. Good luck.

If no one know the policies of your school, how would you expect anyone to know whether you have to take the classes again? It’s completely dependent on the policies of your school.

Talk to your advisor.

Agree with blossom and Rich. Pointing you back to your college’s policies is not “slick.” It’s accurate.

On CC or any anonymous forum, we can only deal with the info that IS given.

There are too many variables for anyone here to give you a good answer without knowing your school and more details (what year you are in, your GPA, if you failed all your courses or just BME classes, if your school has a competitive transition to major policy, etc…). No one is trying to be snarky, we just don’t know your school’s policies.

If you failed gen eds or anything that you would need for a Business major (i.e math), I’d highly suspect you’d have to retake the courses. I would doubt you would need to retake any BME specific courses but you might need to get your GPA up before being eligible to change majors.

The good news is that students change majors all the time and your school and advisor will be able to give you the specifics on what you’ll need to do next.

It’s great that you’ve found what you are interested in! Good luck!
