Hi, kinda late to the party, but UMinn looks like an excellent possibility for a OOS NM Semi due to merit aid and relatively low tuition. The Dec 15 deadline looks doable.

D2 is not sure what she wants to major in, she's thinking biology, chemistry or Spanish right now; and she plans to take premed coursework, whatever she majors in. My questions are: which College should she designate on the application (does it really matter?), and how easy is it to change from Biol Sci to Lib Arts or vice versa? Tending towards Lib Arts right now because that seems to give her the most flexibility, but am open for suggestions.

If this has been asked frequently before, please direct me to a pertinent thread.

Thanks!

entomom…It looks like you’re correct about CLA offering the most flexibility for your D, but it all depends on what else she chooses to study while completing her pre-med requirements. While there are some Bio-oriented majors in CLA, CBS does seem to have the majority of the “more heavily science” oriented Bio and Chem majors. If she opts for Spanish, then CLA would be more appropriate. In either case, as a NMSF I’m sure her stats are more than adequate for acceptance into either college. Our D1 is currently planning to major in Biochemistry in CBS while completing pre-pharmacy requirements. She applied prior to the Nov 1 deadline for early consideration, and as an OOS NMSF received a very generous scholarship offer. If you haven’t contacted her already, Christine O’Shea Foster is the National Merit Recruiter at U of Minn and she can probably give you some excellent information as well, and maybe give you some additional points of contact for more specific questions about the best course of study for your D. Her contact info is located towards the bottom of this page [Information for National Merit Semifinalists](http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/nationalmerit/)
Congrats on your D’s accomplishments thus far, and Good Luck!!

Thanks so much Wolverine, we’ll give her a call tomorrow.

Congratulations to your D, that’s such great news to have so early in the process! I had been looking at the NM thread from time to time, but hadn’t seen the Twin Cities information until today. When I went to the UMinn website, I was really impressed by the college and the merit opportunities for OOS NMF students.

entomom…No problem. Hope Christine can give you some good info/possibilities. You’re right, it’s very exciting and comforting to have 3 great scholarship offers (U of Minn, Alabama, and Auburn) this early in the process. We had no clue about the opportunities NM status could provide, but what a great blessing it was!! Although the guaranteed money from Minn wasn’t as much as UA and AU, the inclusion of the other university-wide scholarships brought it into line with the others. D1 is so excited, as she wasn’t sure U of Minn would be affordable for us but now it’s a real possibility. We’re going to try and go back to visit again in January to confirm what she felt on her initial visit and to give me a chance to see the campus myself.
