So I just received my acceptance letter to Penn State College of Engineering at University Park but since I have applied, I have changed my mind about my major in computer science. If I do decide to go there, would it be possible to change my major?

The day you go to get your orientation and have to go to your major meetings, the first thing they say is that you are not in a major. You are in ENGR. ENGR is pre-major. In your 2nd semester of your sophmore year, you declare your major. Because you are in the college of engineering, you are in ENGR pre-major. You just need to schedule your course around the computer science curriculum when the time comes and then declare computer science as your major once you have your pre-reqs. Last year when I did FTCAP, they put us in different rooms based on our intended majors in order to schedule correctly. I’m sure you can tell them about your different major on New Student Orientation and they will try to accommodate.

If you are interested in another program within the College of Engineering you should also keep in mind that some majors in the College have enrollment caps. If you chose one of those departments you must maintain a minimum GPA (which varies by department, typically 3.0) to be guaranteed a spot in that program. Details are on the College’s website.

Does anyone know when a decision has to be made if you want to enroll?

Probably May 1. Many private schools don’t send out acceptance letters until April.
