I am incredibly interested in the medical field, and have been since I was 4. However, along the way, I found my passion for writing and English. Throughout HS, I focused my EC’s mainly on English/writing, and not so much on Biology/STEM.
However, I am determined to become a doctor, and keep writing as my hobby.
I am applying to many prestigious schools, and was advised to apply to them as an English major, to improve my chances of getting in.
They told me to apply as an English major (due to my EC’s focusing on English/writing), and then change my major to Neuroscience once I get in. On my applications, I was told to not even mention my interest in medicine/STEM.
Is this a good idea? Or should I show my interest in medicine?
Also, should I apply to any BS/MD Combined programs, or is my EC focus on writing going to put me at a disadvantage for this?
– You can be pre-med and an English major as long as you take the required pre-med coursework.
–Unless you apply to a school that accepts by majors, admissions officers are well aware of the fact that you can apply for one major and change once you are at the college. I’ve heard college admission officers say that they don’t pay much attention to intended major in the admission process since about half of the applicants apply undecided and about 50% of those coming in with a designated major end up switching it while they are at college.
–If you do apply to a college that accepts by majors then it is often very difficult to switch from a less competitive major into a more competitive major. Colleges are aware of this “admissions ploy” and don’t encourage it. If you get accepted as an English major to a college that accepts by majors then you should be prepared to graduate with an English major.
