Changing Major or Adding Second Major

Hello,

I am starting my first semester at CCC on Monday. I’m currently deciding between math, physics, and philosophy (Or a mixture of two these as a double major or a major/minor). The most likely current pairing is a physics major with a philosophy minor. With the pre-reqs I’d need to take, it will take me 3 years at CCC to transfer as a physics major. However, I’d be able to transfer as a philosophy major in just 2 years. The 4 main schools I’m looking at are Cal, UCLA, UCSD, and UCSB. I don’t believe that physics or philosophy are impacted at any of these schools. Would I be able to add a second major or change my major at these schools? I know the stickied UCLA FAQ says you can, but that’s just for UCLA and it seems like it was last updated in 2009. I’d appreciate any input, thank you.

You can add them if not impacted, but I will tell you getting a primo internship or two is wayyyyyyy better than any double major or minor. Career-wise companies don’t care about double majors. They DO care about internships.

^I second that.

I’d say do the 3 years for physics, minor in philosophy (also talk to @Cayton if you do philosophy at UCLA), and do some awesome internships.

As a philosophy major, your plan of having a physics major with a philosophy minor seems really cool. I recently watched a couple of MIT lectures on the basics of quantum mechanics, and I gained a new respect for physics altogether. Really cool stuff.

That odd pairing of disciplines would likely be attractive to for some jobs/internships. Plenty of people take 3 years to transfer - I say take that route as well.

Philosophy isn’t impacted at any of those schools. Philosophy is just not that type of major, lol. You should be able to add philosophy as a major at any of those schools if you complete the necessary pre-reqs. Same with physics. You should have no problem changing majors either.

Still, confirm this with UC representatives from those schools. They’ll be able to confirm this kind of stuff for you.
