Changing major to DEA

Hi everyone,

I’m a rising sophomore at Cornell, and am currently listed as a PAM major in HumEc. I have had a mild interest in interior design for a while, but over the past year this interest has grown much larger, and so I’m looking to attempt to switch major to DEA once I’m back at Cornell for the 2017 fall semester.

DEA has a ‘DEA Challenge’ which is basically a small portfolio + artistic responses to some questions, and this must be completed and submitted in order to switch majors. Despite my interest in design, I do not have actual experience in the academic field or work to show for my interest (the closest thing to this would be my Fine Arts portfolio, but I see Fine Arts as being a very different kind of artistic field from that of Interior Design).

Has anyone here transferred to DEA (or had a relative/friend transfer)? Are they expecting you to already be somewhat knowledgeable in design (I am aware that DEA is more than just design, but interior design would be my concentration if accepted into the major)? Common sense tells me that many students applying to undergraduate design programs are not yet familiar with software such as AutoCAD and Revit, but then again many of those at Cornell are overachievers and I would not be surprised if applicants to DEA usually already have full blown portfolios that are completely relevant to the field of architecture…

Thanks in advance for any input!
