Changing majors for incomming freshmen...

So how does it work if you plan to change major? I know you can do it officially after the 1st quarter, which isn't that far away. How does it work for orientation though? I mean, in terms of planning everything out, would your counselor basically stick to the major you're listed under or go with the major you're planning to change to?

I'm pretty confuse on this.

I dont know officially, but I am pretty sure that if you want to pursue another major, you just let your counselor know so then you guys could plan out what pre-reqs to take.

Are groups at orientation assigned by major?

I believe so.

So can I officially change from Econ/Int'l Area Studies to Business Economics at orientation?

I called in and the orientation ppl said you can do it after the first quarter. I also asked about being grouped with ppl in the same major, and they confirmed it. So if you're planning to change major, I don't think being group that way is a good idea. I'm sure they have dealt with this issue every year, but we don't have info. on that yet.

One thing I'm trying to do is specifically indicate that I'm changing major on my educational planner on My UCLA, hopingthat they'll read that BEFORE they plan the grouping. Iono, anyone here on the Orientation staff?

how do you indicate changing majors on MYUCLA?

dragon17,

don't worry about your orientation group, cuz i'm sure the econ/intl area studies majors are grouped with the bizecon majors anyway.

Thanks. I just want all of the electronic stuff (myUCLA and URSA) to be changed to biz econ and indicate that major.

lucky...I'm oin from a science to non-science. Now that's a big difference.

i am changing from art history to psychobio. i dont really want to spend 3 days with a bunch of art history majors...not that there is anything wrong with that

what do you guys know about people who are undecided? Also, what if you want to double major?

Damn, I just noticed something. They required you to declare a major if you have 90 units. Well, I'll reach that mark after my JC summer session is over. The major I'm trying to change to (Global studies) require atleast level 3 before I can declare. I can speak and write in two languages (not counting Spanish in hs) but the last time I took them was over 6 years agol so techincally I can really read but don't remember how to write. I also slacked off alot in spanish. So I think testing into level 3 isn't going happen. I might as well stick to Physiological Science huh since I'm also a pre-med?

I'm an Economics major who wants to change to undeclared or Communications, how should i deal with the groupings at Orientation?

hey, I just talked with an Oreintation staffer (who must be pretty kool since the response was pretty quick). He said don't worry about it.
Here's what he said:
"You'll be fine. Your counselor will discuss the possibilities of a major change, and your group may or may not reflect your old or new major."

for people who have been to orientation: how do you change your major at orientation? and do you do it in the beginning, middle, or end? yeah im not really concerned about who im grouped with, because everybody is interesting (as long as i dont get stuck with a couple of snobs who think they know everything). haha thanks.

Seriously guys don't think about this too much. Last year I came into UCLA as a Pre-Psych major and I had thoughts about changing my major to sociology. My OC said I'd be able to change my major after my first quarter. This was the intended plan but later I decided to change my major to anthropology and when I ended up doing not so well in an anthro core course, I was back to square one. Before I even took that anthro class I visited a counselor and she said before I could change a major or declare one, it is imperative to complete the lower-division classes for the major otherwise if you were able to change majors in an instant, you'd be making multiple trips to the counseling office during your first year.

Bottom line: explore during your first year. I went from being pre-psych to soc to anthro to psychbio and now I'm back to where I started in the first place: psychology. There's no need to go through UCLA bureaucracy for this stuff during your first year. The average UCLA student changes majors twice before declaring one so wait until your junior year to officially declare a major. Have fun, relax, and enjoy your first year at UCLA.
