Is there any point in changing your name on FB so that colleges don't see your profile? And do they check only your wall or who you're friends with...?

BUMPPPP

It doesn’t matter at all. I know a lot of the prep school students in my hometown like to change their names when they’re applying to colleges, but it’s more because they’re following a trend than actually taking precautions against inquisitive admissions officers.

Granted, your profile or cover picture shouldn’t depict you doing something illegal or otherwise unsavory, but that’s sort of a common sense thing, haha. You’ll be fine.

Good luck!

The chances of them looking up your FB for college admissions in the first place is pretty low. For graduate school or a job, it might be more likely. Just check what’s visible to different levels (i.e., friend of friend, public) and make sure there’s nothing horrible showing up.

It largely depends on the content you post. If you redact your timeline and get rid of embarrassing picts and posts, it could actually be a real plus. It can help demonstrate that you have a active social life that could be beneficial to the school. If 50%+ of your posts are questionable, then changing your name is not a bad idea.

I doubt they’ll look but to be safe either clean up your pics/posts/etc (if they need cleaning up), change your name and/or make it totally private.

On the other hand, I read a college book at some point that recommends making it into an asset, with photos of you doing community service, winning awards and so on.

Again, I doubt colleges will look so YMMV.
