Chapel Hill as a safety

I've been trying to pick a safety school, since it's time for me to start applying. I've come up with State, but I have a few friends trying to use Carolina as their safety. How safe is it to do that? I might use it as a secondary safety, but I kind of doubt it.

So even with, like, 2100+ SAT, and 3.9+ UW GPA at a difficult school (that sends about 15ish% of every senior class to Carolina), is it safe?

Carolina is a safety for you. If 15% of your class actually GOES to Carolina, you can safely assume that over 20%, maybe even a third, GET INTO Carolina. With your high test scores and high GPA, you'll certainly get in in-state. I'm assuming you have at least one extracurricular. If you do, you're in :D

Edit: Looked up your stats. Carolina is a safety for you. You might even be in the running for a scholarship--wouldn't depend on it, but hey. I know people with lower stats than yours who were offered Carolina Honors scholarships (7.5K per year)

Good to know, thanks.

Yeah, Carolina was my safety last year, and it worked out for me. My suggestion would be to apply to Carolina early action, and if you don't get in, you can apply to another safety in january.

NCSU was my saftey, but you shouldn't have a problem getting into unc, so sure make it your saftey.

Uumm. I know some NC kids who surprisingly did not get into UNC with some pretty good stats. Don't know exact numbers though. My definition of a safety is pretty much a sure thing, and unless UNC is very formula driven and you are well within the parameters and you get your app in early, I would take a look at another possibility as well. I say that because I know some kid with stats higher than yours who have been turned down by their flagships schools because their program was filled, or some other administrative fluke. Not UNC, but some less prestigous state schools in other state. It was a horrible shock to those kids, their school and family. Things have gotten pretty crazy in this college app process. Do you have a single choice early school that precludes making UNC a EA choice? Will UNC let you know early if you are in or not if you get your appin early even if you are not in the early program? All things to consider.

It should be fine. Keep in mind that NC State has rolling apps, so if you somehow get rejected by UNC in January (or even April--I know people who applied to State at the last minute in May) you still have plenty of time to apply.

Personally I couldn't stand State's campus and used UNCW and Pitt (which gives out merit scholarships like candy) as safeties.

well my school is ridiculously close to State, and I'm around there a lot anyway, I dont' mind the campus so much.

thanks for letting me know that State has rolling admissions, though, that's good to know

I plan on using both as safeties. My college counselor doesnt' seem to have a problem with it, either.

I can't understand why you would use a school's campus as a major factor for choosing that school. Who cares if it's an ugly campus, as long as I'm getting a decent education and have the ability to get a job.

well wouldnt you wanna stay on a campus that makes you feel comfortable rather than cringing at the sight of it? i mean, im pretty sure UNC makes you feel more comfy than..say..u of chicago

Wow. I'm applying to U of Chicago. And State. It's obvious I don't care about the aesthetics of my campus.

Sorry, guess I'm just not that high maintenance

What?!?! NC State is pretty ugly, I agree, but Chicago has a beautiful campus. I got into UNC with a hefty scholarship, but it wasn't my safety (NCSU was). Surprisingly, I didn't get a penny from State; you can't really tell how admissions will work. I'd have another safety, but you should be fine.

UChicago woot. I should've taken the UNC scholarship though. Debt doesn't look as bad when you don't have to pay it yet.

15% to UNC? NCarolinians are so f******g lucky. We send 15% to... IndianaU :(. Had I gone to UNC I'd still be going to a better school than any of my felllow students.

I'm not just talking about the aesthetics-the actual layout is pretty bad too. It doesn't have much of a "college" feeling

by the way, the "15% to UNC" is only for the magnet schools and stuff. My school, an average public, sends about 5% at most to UNC each year

15%ish is from a charter school that was in Newsweek's top 10 a few years ago (dropped to 53rd last year when they changed the standards).

And I haven't visited Chicago so I dont' know what their campus looks like, I was just sayingm that in response to what someone else said.

My school sent about 30 kids to UNC this year, as they do every year. Usually, about 50 or so get in (out of 400) and around 30 end up going.

My school student body was ~430ish, and 'bout 50~ students are going to Carolina...I think about 60 or so got in...(But our school isn't ranked in the top 100 this year..)

about 4-5 in a class of 350 get in from my school.

i went to one of the best high schools in NC, 35 in our class of 480 went.
