@acceptmeplz376, thanks for the details on your CalGrant. Maybe it’s because you’re independent that your CalGrant (I assume maybe it’s a CalGrant B?) was processed so much faster. My son’s CalGrant account says they’re still processing it, but he’s a dependent.
Do you mind sharing if it’s a Cal Grant A or B and what the amount was? I’m expecting the CalGrant A to be around 6K, but I really don’t know for sure.
@acceptmeplz376 I confirmed with one of the admissions counselors I’ve been emailing- June 1 is correct. Dodge kids probably won’t hear back until mid-April just because of the extra component of their application but that still gives me time before I have to answer CalState. I also applied to NYU and hope to have an answer about that around the same time as Dodge if possible.
Soooo weird… I got a letter from financial aid but it only shows the panther scholarship I was originally awarded. The other grants/loan areas were just blank. Lol hopefully they send another one once my FAFSA processes.
@screenname2019 Log into your portal. If you do not have your password, call the IS&T department and they’ll do a reset. It could be that either your FAFSA has not processed yet or there were certain grants or loans you didn’t qualify for, see if your portal says the same thing (since the portal contains all your financial info after you receive your package), if it does say the same thing just call the office, they’re super helpful
@jakecap1123 yeah I definitely think you’ll be fine!!! Talent majors and majors with creative supplements or pre-reqs usually don’t hear back right away so you’re not the only one, hang in there!!! NYU would be awesome too though
@Moizzzzzz where were you applying from?/did your transcripts already get received or they’re still lost? If they’re still lost and you’re local just walk it in (it’s easier), if they already were received but delayed that’s not a big deal because anything but the application itself can be late. As long as your application itself was received on time you will be given as much priority as everyone else.
@sbjdorlo sorry for the delay but I wanted to check and confirm first. So I qualified for both A and B but I think it’s because I’m independent that I was awarded B, my total came up to a little over 10k for that grant. Although, when I received my financial aid package I also got an amount from the Chapman Grant so your son might receive that as well. The combined grants made it possible for me. Is your son under 24? Unfortunately in the eyes of the FAFSA they don’t consider you an independent unless you’re turning 24 at some point during that year. I turn 24 later in the year and although I have been filing alone for the past 4 years, I barely qualified. If your son is an older transfer and turning 24 during the school year (or next year) you can try and file an appeal for financial aid based off of his own income for more financial aid. Not sure if that’s a possibility but throwing it out there just in case. Hopefully he receives his financial package soon and it’s good news. Although even if it is not, try and appeal. Chapman seems to be very honorable in their word of working with students.
I called but they wouldn’t give me my portal login. They said I have to wait until April for them to send out portals and FinAid. I want to commit so badly but I need to make sure it’s affordable.
@screenname2019 okay I just realized that I only got my portal info so early because I committed (I got it two days after). That’s annoying, but luckily most schools don’t have a late May or early June commitment date so you’ll be fine! April is still before priority housing and what not too.
@acceptmeplz376, thanks for the information. Yes, I think it’s because you’re independent that you got a lot of aid. My son is turning 22 in May, so won’t be 24 for 2 more years. He’ll be in college for 3 more years because of his major. Chapman looks dubious at best, but he’ll at least speak with the music dept and financial aid to see if they can make it more affordable.
@ilovechicken1236 call the IS&T office, they can’t send the password via email so just call them and tell them your email is ___ and you need a password or password reset! Also, if you’re logging into anything that asks for username just use the first part of your email (usually your last name) not the @chapman.edu part
@sbjdorlo Of course. And that definitely is the case, although I was hoping for slightly more because I’m paying for myself but I applied for some outside scholarships so hopefully that works out. And that is tough, but I hope they work with him. If he is looking for a school that will help him Chapman definitely is the way to go! Did he apply to any other privates or public schools in SoCal? I was considering USC as well but unfortunately they are the only school that does not see you as an independent until 26, which really hurt my chances because I am paying solely for myself but they still required my parents income so I could not go with that option. UCLA has a great music program as well I heard.
@ilovechicken1236 Also congrats on committing! Are you going to be living through campus housing or outside of campus housing? I’m having some issues with the housing application (it hasn’t processed me in there yet) so unfortunately I can’t start filling out my application until that is resolved. But they said it should be by next week.
My son also applied to Biola, Concordia, and Cal Baptist for privates. No UCs because not only did he not have the right kind of transfer units (he’ll have over 60 units but UCs don’t take them), he did not want to attend a UCs. He is focused mostly on the conservatories at Long Beach, Chapman and Biola, but likely the privates will be unaffordable as a transfer student. In that case, he’ll focus on Long Beach, Fullerton, SDSU and maybe Concordia since they gave him about 90% of tuition in scholarships. Fullerton gave him more than full tuition scholarship. If Chapman’s tuition wasn’t so outrageous at 52K, things might be different!
