Chapman student body

I am not a fan of CC, but this is one of the only existing forums that can probably answer my questions.

I visited Chapman on their Discover Chapman! day way back in the fall. I went there to check out their film facilities (which were amazing), but one thing that disconcerted me a little was the break-down of the student body. I am Chinese, and when I peered out into the vast sea of faces when the chancellor/whoever was speaking in the auditorium, I could count the number of non-white people on my fingers and toes. This is not to say that I'm against that particular ratio, since I live in a town/go to a school that is pretty much 80% white. But, I realize that at other universities, especially the UCs, the Asian percentages are HIGH, like really high. I had never really considered my race to be a big issue in choosing a college, and I'm definitely not a racist, but... when you're the minority, you kind of notice it.

So, I was wondering a few things:
1. Are there clubs like Asian American Association that provide a solid support network?
2. Are most Chapman students wealthy and from the valley? (basically, do they fit in the Valley girl stereotype.)
3. Is the 7:3 female to male ratio something considerably noticeable?

Thanks in advance.

We haven't been out there to visit yet, but the things I've read online have said that the film school is more diverse than the university as a whole. There is a facebook group for Chapman 2012 that you might want to check out. Everybody has a picture posted!

7 girls to 3 guys has got to be noticeable. ;-)

Diversity is not a strong point at Chapman, but they are working on it. You probably will still feel pretty comfortable here. I did not know that was the ratio, it probably seems more like 6:4. And like any private school, there are a lot of wealthy kids. However, there is a huge amount of students who are on scholarship, and there are tons of middle and lower class kids here too.

Thank god for this post. I'm an asian-american also considering chapman but for the business program. I've heard of the valley-girl stereotype and the girl-guy ratio is laughable. Hopefully, it will be pretty comfortable if I do go because I go to a high school where the population is 80% asian.

Someone I know at Chapman told me you wouldn't know the school is a rich kids school until you walk into the parking lot. Basically everyone is very down to earth and friendly...so don't worry about the stuck up people stereotype.

However, pretty much everyone is white though.

I guess "rich white people" need to go to school, too. This topic is so interesting. My son went to UCLA and was in a predominantly asian dominated major. Never once did it occur to us to ask for caucasian groups or a Caucasian American Association. I guess I could say at his graduation that I could "count the number if white people on my fingers and toes." Possibly just my fingers. I find this topic so racist, but I realize that the op would not understand.

haha to me, the way chapman is mostly white is interseting to me.

this is cause i'm asian, and my HS happens to be over 66% asian, hahah.

however, i'm not really worried about race n stuff, since like, obviously u have to get used to changes and well... i want to get used being around diff ppl.

ya chapman is basically white, so whenever i hear them talking about how much more diverse they're getting each year it's honestly a load of bull. i do know a handful of asains... but that's about it. yes there are a lot of wealthy people here but for the most part everyone is pretty easy going, and yes the film school is a lot more diverse than the rest of chapman.

You guys trust me... You will never get less diverse than a Baptist school in Nashville, TN. I attended my first year at Belmont University for the music business and I am not even a Christian (No offense to anyone). I have never met more people in my life that all believe the exact same thing and they are all white. I come from Chicago where there is tons of diversity. I know Chapman will be better, haha.

hey xFumiko, so tell me, what do u think of MBA program out there at chapman, how is it and what are the job prospects after completion of the course?

slx i know how you feel in that i felt uncomfortable due to the ratio of asians to whites, and i myself am chinese as well. it's not that i am racist, but i can't help be feel rather inferior and out of my comfort zone. i really hope i fit in and that the campus has nice people because i am feeling pretty scared actually. =X

I agree with Adultparentmom. This seems a bit crazy. But hey maybe "rich white kids" don't need to go to school huh? Maybe my cousin should have joined a caucasian support group since he was in a predominately asian based major also.
